Salta

Compared to the other Argentine wine regions, Salta is extremely small with only 5,200 acres and accounting for around 1% of Argentina’s wine production. Some vineyards in this region reach altitudes of 9840ft (3000m) above sea level and are often located in mountainous terrains. However, their proximity to the equator is similar to that of Egypt, Mozambique, Alice Springs and Baja California with latitudes as low as 24 degrees south. One of the most popular grape varieties grown in this region is the stunning Torrontés, an exotically perfumed white grape. Chardonnay is the other prominent white grape grown in the region. In terms of red grape varieties, Cabernet Saugvignon, Malbec, Syrah and the lesser known Tannat grapes have an excellent colour and concentration which benefit from the region’s high altitude providing fruity wines with a natural acidity.
