Sangiovese

The Sangiovese grape originated in Tuscany, and it is Italy’s primary red wine grape. Due to its a very thin skin, it is preferable to grow this variety in a hot, dry climate as opposed to a cold, wet one which can be extremely damaging to the fruit. Low altitudes can also cause problems for this grape varietal, as this can prevent it from fully ripening. Regardless of the climate or the altitude however, the Sangiovese takes time to mature on the vine to produce fruity, medium body wines with a moderate to high natural acidity. They can range from elegant and firm to very robust and assertive. Young Sangiovese wines are fruity and spicy, while the mature wines acquire a deeper, richer oak flavour.
