Western Australia
The winemaking regions of Western Australia are almost entirely concentrated in the south-western portion of the State. These regions include the Swan District near the State capital Perth and, further south, the regions of Peel, Geographe, Blackwood Valley, Pemberton, Manjimup, Great Southern and Margaret River. This region has become known for zesty Sauvignon Blancs, superlative Cabernet Sauvignons and bold Zinfandel. Plantagenet Wines was the first winery in the Great Southern wine growing region of Western Australia. The total area under vine in the combined nine established wine regions of West Australia is now over 10,460 ha or just over 26,150 acres. The main red grape varieties in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, along with white grape varieties, Semillon, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.
