Weinviertel
Situated to the south of the Thaya river, the Weinviertel is located between Brünn and Vienna. The Weinviertel is Austria’s biggest wine-growing region, with over 13,300 hectares, which is nearly a third of all Austria’s vineyard area. The fertile region is Central Europe’s oldest agricultural site dating back some 7,000 years. The entire region derives its name from viticulture: Weinviertel, the wine district. Warm loess soils and a Pannonian climate with mild winters give the Weinviertel wines their typical fruit, while the difference between daytime and night time temperatures intensifies the aroma of the region’s wines. Nearly 8,500 hectares of the Weinviertel is devoted to the indigenous grape variety Grüner Veltliner, two-thirds of all Grüner Veltliner grown in Austria. With a light, greenish yellow colour, Grüner Veltliner has a fruity, yet peppery taste.
