Corsica

Wine produced in Corsica benefits greatly from the warmer, drier Mediterranean climate. There are nine designated AOC regions on the island, as well as a Vin de Pays appellation, which accounts for more than half of the island’s production. The first wine region in Corsica to receive an AOC designation was Patrimonio in 1968. Situated on the north coast, it is still considered to produce some of the island’s finest wines. The principal Corsican appellation is Vin de Corse, which includes several crus. The Ajaccio region, on the west coast produces medium-bodied red and rosé wines from Sciacarello, a grape variety unique to the island. White wines are produced from the Ugni Blanc grape variety and the Vermentino, which is also called Malvoisie. In the main, all reds, rosés and whites produced in Corsica are light and fresh, and best enjoyed when young.
