Jura Savoie

Located at the foot of the Alps close to the Swiss border, there are the two small wine regions: the Jura and the Savoie. The Jura is situated to the north of Savoie, and it is most renowned for its famous Vin Jaune or “Yellow wine”. A remarkably dry, complex and very aromatic wine, some producers will age this for up to 10 years in the barrel. Indeed, it is best appreciated after having been given another 10 years in bottle and has the ability, in good vintages, to age for a century or more. Savoie is also known for white wines, many of which are best appreciated when young. Savoie has many local grapes, such as Jacqucre though other white grape varieties include Rousset, Chasselas and Gringet. The soils are primarily clay-limestone in both the Jura and Savoie, and it is very rich in calcium.
