Nahe

The 12,000 acre Nahe wine region is located west of Rheinhessen, which it borders, and east of the Mosel. The 180 metre high Rotenfels is the biggest rock face north of the Alps and provides shelter to the narrow terraced vineyards situated at its base. Vineyards in the Nahe region thrive on a variety of soils along the steep slopes of the Nahe River and its tributaries. The northern district of Nahe, with its loam and sandy soil, produce wines that resemble neighbouring Rheinhessen, while the slate soil further south yields wines similar to that of the fine flowery bouquet wines of the Mosel and the elegant wines of Rheingau. The predominant grape varieties planted in the Nahe wine region include Riesling, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau.
