Saar

Situated on the western border of Germany within the Mosel region and just a few miles from the Alsace region of France, the Saar region takes its name from the Saar River that flows from northeast France down through Saar. There are around 13,500 hectacres planted to vine on soil that is dominated by porous slate which provides ideal drainage for the heavy rainfall received in this region. Indeed, many of the best steep sloped vineyards have no top soil at all, just broken slate. Approximately 1,500 hectares is planted to Riesling, the main grape variety grown here, along with other varieties such as Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Pinot Gris, Rivaner, Kerner and Pinot Blanc. Wines from the Saar region show excellent structure both in terms of balance and acidity, with a heady mixture of fresh citrus fruit flavours and floral aromas resulting in some of the finest wines Germany has to offer.
