Lazio
Centred around Rome, Lazio is a popular tourist spot. Set amongst a rocky backdrop, the soil type is volcanic. Lazio is home to 26 DOCs, but the region is famous for the three DOC white wines, Castelli Romani, Frascati and Est! Est!! Est!! di Montefiascone (which is perhaps the less well known in international markets). Other DOCs that have made a name for themselves are Orvieto and Marino. While the Lazio region is famous for white wine, some red wines are produced like the rare gem Aleatico di Gradoli from around the Lago di Bolsena lake. It is a sweet red which can also be transformed into a liquoroso. The grape variety used as a base for all the red wines from this region is Montepulciano.
