Trentino-Alto Adige
Trentino and Alto Adige were combined into a region in 1948. The Alto Adige, known as Südtyrol, is a Germanic speaking region of Italy, as it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I. Trentino-Alto Adige is the most northerly wine-producing region in Italy, however only accounts for less than 1% of the national wine production. However Grappa, a vodka-like traditional Italian drink, accounts for around 10% of production and is made from the leftover skins and seeds of grapes used for wine. Grapes native to this region include, the white grape variety Nosiola, along with red varieties such as, Schiava, Teroldego Rotoliano and Marzemino. Well known international grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau, Sylvaner, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, Moscato, Pinot Nero and Pinot Grigio are also grown throughout the region.
