Baja California

One region that has become a leader in reviving the reputation of Mexican wines is undoubtedly Baja California where 90% of Mexico’s wine is produced. Indeed, the areas around Valle de Guadalupe and Calafia have become renowned for high quality wines produced by several small boutique winegrowers. Situated near the seaport of Ensenada, the Baja California region covers an area in the north east, towards the beer producing town of Tecate. With a typically Mediterranean climate of warm days and cool nights, and the benefits of cool ocean breezes from the Pacific, grape varieties such as, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay do particularly well in this region. Soils across the region are made up from a mixture of alluvial soils and decomposed granite.
