Meknes
Located 120 kilometres from Rabat, the region of Meknes is Morocco’s wine capital boasting luscious and fertile land by virtue of its altitude, its amount of sunshine and its mild temperatures. The French developed Meknes into a wine region, however the foothills of the Atlas Mountains near to the town of Meknes has been wine producing area since the Roman Empire. The Appellations of Meknes are popular for robust red wine grapes such as in the Beni Sadden, Beni Zehoune, Ksar and Guerrouane regions. From Meknes comes Clariet de Meknès, a delightful pinkish red, which resembles the light French style. Meknes red wines are best characterized as fruity, chewy and rich, and similar to Moroccan cuisine, many of these wines are infused with spices such as vanilla.
