Dao

Situated around the old cathedral city of Viseu in north central Portugal, Dao has a reputation for producing some of the country's most distinctive and elegant red wines. Dao wine, called Vinho do Dao in Portugal, is produced from both red and white grape varieties. However, more than two-thirds of wine produced in Dao is red and is made from one, or a combination of, nine different grape varietals. Touriga Nacional is one of the principle Port wine grapes, and this grape must account for at least 20% in any red wine produced. This grape adds spicy, peppery notes to Dao red wine which is typically full of rich forest fruit flavours. Encruzado is the dominant white grape varietal, which is usually blended with others from the region such as Bical or Arinto to provide the nutty oak quality to white wines.
