Bierzo

Bierzo is a small, remote wine region northwest of Castilla y León, close to the border with Galicia. Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has a profound effect on its overall climate, with average temperatures during the growing season much lower than in more inland areas. Bierzo's soil also contains more slate and granite than in most other regions of Spain. However, the indigenous red grape variety, Mencia does particularly well in these conditions to produce intense coloured, fruity wines. Garnacha, another important red grape variety is primarily used in blends. White wines are also produced in Bierzo, using Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino grapes.
