Castilla y Leon
Situated to the north of Madrid, Castilla y Leon is comprised of the historical regions of Leon and Old Castile covering an area of approximately 94,225 kilometres. The Sistema Central and Cordillera Cantabrica mountain ranges surrounding Castilla y Leon help to block the winds from the Atlantic Ocean, reducing precipitation in the region. However, the predominant maritime climate can still produce a continental effect with dry, hot summers being followed by long, harsh winters. Indeed, these conditions have proved perfect for Castilla y Leon’s most prominent winegrowing area, Ribera del Duero and its most important grape variety, the Tempranillo grape (known locally as Tinta del Pais and Tinto Fino). However, Castilla y Leon produces an array of both red and white wines, including some exquisite Tintos de Guarda, Crianzas and Reservas, as well as the softer, fruiter Vinos Jovenes which are made to be enjoyed young. The region also produces the sparkling Espumosos, the liqueur Aguardientes, and a fortified style of wine called Licorosos.
