Catalunya

Catalunya (Catalonia) is situated in the north-east corner of Spain covering an area of approximately 60,000 hectares and consisting of 200 vineyards (Bodegas), which produce 38 million litres of wine annually. Tarragona is one of the largest areas in Catalunya producing young red, rosé and white wines, as well as some fabulous port. However, perhaps the most famous sub-regions in Catalunya is the Penedes region, best known for the production of its signature sparkling Cava wine, and upon which Catalunya has largely established its viniculture reputation. Though not specific to this region alone, 95% of all Cava is produced in this area. There are 25 grape varieties authorised for winemaking in Catalunya, however the main grape varieties used for white wine and Cava production are Parellada, Macabeo, Xarel.lo and Chardonnay. These are required by law to be aged for a minimum of nine months following fermentation.
