Somontano
Somontano means "Under the Mountain". The Somontano wine region is situated in the province of Huesca and covers an area of approximately 4,600 hectares at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. It consists of 32 vineyards producing 15 million litres of wine annually. The region is, however dominated by top wineries such as Enate, Bodegas Pirineos and Viñas del Vero. The climate in this part of Spain is continental with snowy winters and hot summers, with roughly 2,700 hours of direct sunlight per year. Traditionally, indigenous grapes such as Moristel, Parraleta and Alcanon were used to create very rustic wines, however these have now been replaced with many international varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer.
