Aglianico

Aglianico (also known as Gnanico, Agliatica, Ellenico, Ellanico and Uva Nera) is a black grape grown in the Basilicata and Campania regions of Italy. The vine originated in Greece and was brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The grape has a tendency to ripen late with harvests taking place as late as November. If the grape is picked early or with too high a yield, it can be excessively tannic. Wines produced from this grape tend to be full-bodied with firm tannins and high acidity. The trademark colouring of wine produced from this grape is a deep garnet.
