Picpoul

Picpoul (also known as Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul and Picpoul de Pinet) is a variety of wine grape grown primarily in France. It exists in both a dark-skinned (Picpoul Noir) and light-skinned (Picpoul Blanc) version, however there is also a very rare Picpoul Gris variety. Its name means “lip stinger” which refers to the acidity of the grapes. The most common variety of the grape is the Picpoul Blanc. Picpoul Blanc can be used for varietal wines but also for blending, while Picpoul Noir is more popular for blending due to the high alcohol and pale coloured wine that is produced. Picpoul will flower early but ripens late, and usually not harvested until the end of October.
