Bodega Cecchin Graciana 2018 (1x75cl)

At Bodega Cecchin, they play Rugby and make wine....although not at the same time. In these parts the oval ball and grapes like Carignan are revered as in areas of the Corbieres and Fitou. Although the origin of the Cecchin family is Italy having emigrated to Argentina in 1910. In 1959 Jorge and Pedro Cecchin fulfilled a dream and bought 11 hectares of vines in Mendoza and the current now much larger estate is run by their grandson Oscar Alberto.

The crops in all three of the estates that make up Bodega Cecchin have been certified for organic farming as of 2005. Cecchin‘s handling and processing in the winery is also certified as organic from 2005, so its wines are subsequently certified organic.

Bodega Cecchin also farms biodynamically, but only in a small portion of the vineyards (just 2 hectares in each of the three estates). This is because biodynamic farming is too labour-intensive to be implemented over a larger area of vines. Bodega Cecchin owns not only vineyards planted with a wide range of different grape varieties, but also peach, fig and apricot orchards, olive, walnut and almond groves. The planting of these different crops is necessary to comply with the rules stipulated by the organic certifying agency, OIA.

Giving birth to an organic wine is to foster a natural environment where vines live together with other plants, favoring ecological balance. Their vines welcome a rich variety of vegetation that grows in chemical-free soil.

They pick the fruit at the precise moment, treating it with respect, giving it time and space. This way, their farming and production procedures carry a stamp of “no chemicals” all through the process, preserving the environment. Their wines, oils and grape juice have been produced with the same philosophy for more than 100 years.

100% Graciana.

Cecchin Graciana is a marvellous deep red with aromas of spice, vanilla and raspberry notes. Round and smooth in the mouth, there is a perfect combination of tannins from the wood and wine, which gives a long and very satisfying aftertaste.

ABV = 13.5%.

Catena Adrianna Vineyard River Stones Malbec 2015 (1x75cl)

** THIS WINE IS HELD IN NO OR LOW STOCK BUT IS QUICKLY BROUGHT IN TO ORDER. ORDERS PLACED BY 9am EACH MONDAY WILL BE WITH US FOR IMMEDIATE DESPATCH ON THURSDAY. **

“The 2015 Adrianna Vineyard River Stones is from the stonier part of Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, from vines right next to the river bed at 1,349 meters in altitude, a part that tends to produce more austere wines. There is higher ripeness compared with 2014 and 2016. Even though it might show a little more exuberant in comparison, the palate reveals an austere wine that has a large personality but is superbly balanced, with very fine-grained tannins and very good balance. But sometimes comparisons can be tedious, and there are wines that suffer. This is one of them, but it is still superb.”  Wine Advocate, 95 points, 29 June 2018

“Very intense hot stone character with some limestone and iron. Blackberry and dark tea. White salt. Full body, round and juicy. Rich finish. Flamboyant.” James Suckling, 96 points, 27 March 2018

In 1902, Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant, planted his first vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina. The winery has remained under family control — now in its fourth generation — and is one of the few family-owned wine companies in Argentina that remains in Argentine hands. Owned today by Nicolás Catena and his daughter Laura, Bodega Catena Zapata is known as the pioneer of fine wine from Argentina, and Nicolás is recognized as the vintner who revolutionized wine quality in Argentina. A trained economist, Nicolás began this revolution in the early 1980s and continues to challenge himself and his team to make wines that can be counted among the best in the world. His measured approach to viticulture has taken its place in wine history as the pioneer of Malbec and high-altitude viticulture.

Catena wines, first launched in 1992, set a new standard for quality in South America. The wines immediately proved the quality potential of Argentina and garnered the first outstanding reviews for Argentine wines from worldwide media. After more than 20 years, the wines of Catena continue to lead the way in Argentine viticulture and winemaking. The family and the winery’s employees take great pride in carrying on the tradition that began over a century ago.

The Catena family’s estate vineyards are located in the premier growing regions of Villa Bastías, Tupungato; Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo; Lunlunta, Maipu; Gualtallary, Tupungato and La Consulta, San Carlos. Nicolás believes the terroir of Mendoza's high altitude wine country (3,000 - 5,000 feet above sea level) is unique to the world, and the reality of this belief is expressed in every bottle of Catena wine crafted.

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.

The inaugural 1997 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend set a new standard of quality for wines from South America when it won a series of blind tastings against first growths and other prestigious cuvées from around the world. Indeed, it featured as one of Decanter's Wine Legends in October 2018 (see blue link below).

Catena Zapata Nicolas 1997 - Decanter Wine Legend October 2018

“The 2015 Nicolás has the highest ever percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, with 17% Malbec for company and is a stunning blend that’s right up there with some of the best vintages of the wine. Floral, minty and refined, it has subtle, spicy oak, notes of green herbs and red fruits, tangy acidity and remarkable palate length. One for the cellar.” Tim Atkin MW, 96 points, 5th Jan 2018.

Nicolás Catena Zapata has an intense, deep purple color with bluish-black tones. On the nose, aromas of black fruits – blackberries, black cherries, black plums – predominate with subtle notes of vanilla and dark chocolate intermingled with savory hints of green olive and a stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is tremendously complex, unfolding layer upon layer of red currant, eucalyptus, and black pepper flavours. Black cherries and blackberries give way to cassis followed by a hint of saline minerality. The wine is remarkably concentrated with a firm tannic structure providing the backbone for the lush fruit. The finish is long, giving some idea of the very long aging potential of this Argentine masterpiece.

This wine is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Malbec.

Dona Paula Estate Malbec 2018 (1x75cl)

The 2017 vintage was awarded 89 points and Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their October 2018 edition panel tasting of South American signature grapes (see blue link below).

Dona Paula Estate Malbec 2017 - Oct 2018 Decanter review

Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods, maximising the true expression of terroir. Continuous innovation in vineyard management ensures Doña Paula produces top quality wines from one year to the next.

The grapes were sourced from two of Dona Paula's best estate vineyards: Finca Alluvia in Gualtallary, situated at 1,350 metres above sea level and Finca Los Indios, located in Altamira, Uco Valley at an altitude of 1,100 metres. The soils are stony in the first location and sandy loam in the second, but both have a high calcareous content. This Malbec displays the characteristics of its cool climate origins and the wide diurnal temperature differences. The daily diurnal temperature range is excellent for the production of quality grapes; the nightly cooling-off extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity. The vines are grown on espaliers, using drip irrigation and the vineyards are cultivated using sustainable agricultural practices.

2018 saw a return to higher yields, after the low yielding vintages of 2016 and 2017. Doña Paula had a record harvest in 2018, with the highest average in the province. The growing season was dry, with very low rainfall and average temperatures, which resulted in fruit with optimal ripeness. 2018 is being hailed as a classic year for Mendoza.

The grapes were hand-picked, prior to a gentle destemming without crushing the berries. A cold, pre-fermentation maceration was carried out. Fermentation took place at low temperatures, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of 15 to 20 days, extracting colour, flavour and fine tannins. The wine was then racked to first, second and third-use French oak barrels for a period of 12 months.

100% Malbec.

Intense violet in colour, this estate Malbec has enticing aromas of plums, black cherries, liquorice and spice, backed by subtle mineral and graphite notes. Great balance and freshness on the palate, with a deep concentration of ripe fruit, soft tannins and a persistent finish.

ABV = 14.0%.

Finca Las Glicinas, Terciopelo Syrah 2018 (1x75cl)

** ARRIVAL & AVAILABILITY **

The Terciopelo is not yet here given its release from the cellars in Argentina only very recently.

21 Sep - It has just passed through the Panama Canal. It will be here in mid-October (in good amount). With these "deep water imports", there is always the possibility of a hold-up on the high seas (storms, canal waits, not pirates) and customs delays when it arrives into the UK. If we've already taken customer money, such delays (after a long wait already) rankle a bit. We can't change the origin, routing, or timing uncertainty of the Terciopelo ... but we can decline taking any funds until it's cleared customs. And we do want to put it on offer now: customers will be curious and invariably want to secure it when they read of it.

To this end, we are deploying our usual waiting list approach. That is, send us an email to/at communications@exelwines.co.uk, telling us how much you require. We will duly reserve some for you when it arrives. A few days before it does, we'll be in touch, asking you to go on-line and buy it and we can then arrange delivery.

IMPORTANT:

- If seeking to buy other wines from us, do please keep the Terciopelo apart from them in ordering. That is:

- Please buy those other items online as one action. Send us an email re the Terciopelo as another.

- Please don't email your overall order: since online sales are immediate and emails over a weekend are not, there is a good chance low-stock items will have been depleted by the time the email can be acted upon

- If you want to make other ordered wines wait for the Terciopelo's arrival for carriage reasons, we can hold them for you (although it is not preferred).

- However, please note that a late arrival of the Terciopelo does not see the other wines sent to you separately to offset the delay. At the prices we offer, we can't do this any other way. A 'delayed free postage' option would means we'd have to charge ~£2/btl more for the wine!

Finca Las Glicinas (FLG) is a family business dedicated to growing quality grapes to produce premium wines, and to producing wines with selected vines from our own terroir. Our vineyards are located in Alto Valle de Uco, more specifically in the region of Paraje Altamira, La Consulta, in the Department of San Carlos, in the Province of Mendoza. Their signature wines include Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and some complex blends which have a distinct identity, typical of the estates of Paraje Altamira.

The family adventure of Finca Las Glicinas began in 2003 when, fascinated by the beauty of the landscape, they decided to acquire a Malbec vineyard, which had been planted in the year 1999 in the heart of Paraje Altamira. They were inspired and guided by an old family winemaking tradition, which started many generations ago in the Piemonte region of Italy.

The premium Terciopelo line of FLG's red wines are principally characterized by their complexity. With these wines, the scrupulous selection from the vines in the vineyard is followed by the meticulous processing of the wines at the winery. These are mineral wines. Their fruity and floral notes, harmoniously combined with the wood/oak in which they are aged, gives them a classical elegance. An enforced bottle storage before release adds to that quality. Currently available in the Terciopelo line are this Syrah plus a Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and a delicious and complex red blend.

For this wine, the Terciopelo Syrah 2018, see the blue link below for the excellent fiche technique/technical note from the winemakers themselves.

Finca Las Glicinas, Terciopelo Syrah 2018 - fiche technique

Syrah 100%.

Visually, intense purplish-red with bright flashes. On the nose, Tercioplelo Syrah 2018 presents a complex array of aromas of both red and black berry fruits. The spices, typical of Syrah, are melded with notes of tobacco and cocoa from the oak. On the palate, freshness particularly stands out, with excellent acidity and a full, rounded mouthfeel. This is a wine of great structure and complexity, whose subtle mineral notes distinctly express its origin in the terroir of Paraje Altamira.

ABV = 14.6%.
