Compass Box Hedonism Blended Grain Whisky (1x70cl)

Hedonism’s creator John Glaser dreamed of creating a Scotch that showed off the spectrum of flavour grain whisky is capable of. As the spirit is naturally mellower than malt whisky, Glaser chose a variety of styles and levels of maturity to create layers of flavour and complexity, which journey through vanilla cream, toasted coconut and soft toffee.

The whisky used differs from batch to batch – just one or two vattings are created every year – but tends to derive from Cameronbridge, Carsebridge, Cambus, Port Dundas and Dumbarton, the latter four of which are now silent distilleries. From these lost sites a mixture of first-fill American oak barrels and rejuvenated Hogsheads are used to develop that depth of flavour, with some ages falling under the ‘rare and old’ banner.

Each batch is married together in barrels for up to 24 months before being bottled at 43% ABV and without chill-filtration for a thicker, sumptuous mouthfeel.

Nose : From the first delectable introduction, Hedonism is all ripe fruit, fraises des bois and sponge cake. Some red pepper provides an interesting point to mull.

Palate: Very sensual, disarmingly sleek and creamy. Black cherry and sweet spices, some cereal notes.

Finish: Very warm and spiced, toasty, some oak and milk chocolate.

Ghosted Reserve 26 Year Old Blended Malt Whisky Rare Cask (1x70cl)

The Ghosted Reserve is the first blended malt from William Grant & Sons that contains whisky hailing from long closed distilleries Inverleven and Ladyburn. Both of which have been closed since 1991 and 1975 respectively. Rare Cask Reserves Ghosted Reserve is the first release from the ghosted casks series. An exceptional one-off expression, which is not only rare but completely unrepeatable. This rich, creamy masterpiece offers notes of almond oil and zesty citrus fruit. One of only 4100 individually numbered bottles were created and only 1200 are available to purchase in the UK.

On the nose - cashew nuts and toffee with hints of dark chocolate. Fresh orange peel and cinnamon. Freshly baked bread and cereal notes come through later.

Palate - spices immediately come to the fore - cinnamon, vanilla pods and pepper. Then lots more orange peel, along with other tropical fruits including pineapple and papaya. Warm toffee and raisin notes underpin the proceedings.

Warm and long finish, moving away from the spice character and towards the dark chocolate - reminiscent of sticky toffee pudding. Tasty. A well-balanced blended malt and a rich, oily, dessert-like dram.

ABV = 42.0%.

Shackleton Blended Malt Whisky (1x70cl)

Sir Ernest Shackleton is known as much for his camaraderie and leadership as he is for his adventurous spirit. It was with whisky that Sir Ernest Shackleton brought his crew together to toast wives and sweethearts, celebrate birthdays and above all foster a sense of team spirit that led them to succeed against the hardest of odds. To bolster team spirit on his Antarctic expedition (Nimrod, 1907), Sir Ernest Shackleton personally ordered 25 cases of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky. In 2007, a century after the expedition, three cases of the perfectly preserved whisky were discovered, frozen into the ice beneath Shackleton’s base camp at Cape Royds. The whisky was excavated and flown to New Zealand where it was carefully thawed by the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust in a purpose-built environment and public gallery at Canterbury Museum. After its discovery frozen in the ice, world renowned Master Blender, Richard Paterson, carried out painstaking analysis to re-create this antique whisky, and used this as the foundation to create Shackleton – a modern Blended Malt with ice in its DNA.

Inspired by one of the 20th century’s most charismatic leaders, Shackleton is a modern Scotch that embodies the spirit of a legend. Best enjoyed over ice. Shackleton Blended Malt Scotch is based on the spirit supplied to the 1907 British Antarctic Expedition, expertly crafted using a selection of the finest Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies.

The aromas on this whisky are smooth and warming with vanilla, toffee apple, cinnamon and ginger. On the palate you will find dark sugar, sweet dried fruits and glazed pineapple giving it a freshness in addition to its more comforting and rich flavours. The finish is almost like hot mulled wine with praline chocolate and a final whisper of bonfire smoke.

The Epicurean Lowland Malt, Douglas Laing (1 x 70cl)

Douglas Laing’s The Epicurean Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky tells the story of a 1930s Glasgow man, a real cheeky chappy who was ever the life and soul of the party, and a real connoisseur of fine food and drink. A dram they describe as “city born and bred”, The Epicurean is a blend of some of the finest Lowland Malts; a marriage of the best that the East and the West of Scotland have to offer. This small batch bottling is proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at 46.2% ABV.

The Epicurean has aromas that are barley-rich, citric, floral and herbal. The mouth-coatingly sweet palate displays crunched sugar, burnt citrus, mixed spices, thyme, peaches and hard candy. This is charmingly underpinned and enriched in the finish with more of that earlier herbal character, in a gristy style with almonds, cut grass and burnt sugar.

Antiquary 21 Year Old (1x 70cl)

John & William Hardie began their quest to create the perfect blended Scotch whisky more than 150 years ago. In 1888, using only the finest and rarest malts, they succeeded in creating what was considered to be superior to all other blends; The Antiquary. Big Peat Blended Malt (1x 70cl)

Big Peat is a remarkable marriage of Malt Whiskies only from the island of Islay. He is, of course, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at high alcohol strength (46%), resulting in a naturally oily spirit that promises an incredible mouth-feel. With Caol Ila spirit bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg the medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a degree of elegance, Big Peat represents all that is Islay in a bottle. Fred Laing tells us that of course, there are a couple of Blender's Secrets in Big Peat too – but even after a few drams, he won’t share that info – and so it remains his peaty little secret!

The nose opens fresh, salty and clean, and develops to malted barley dried over peat. A damp, earthy character that’s immediately punchy. On the palate you’ll detect ashes, sweet tar, beaches and smoking chimneys. A long and lingering finish with salty, tangy liquorice, smoke and yet more bonfire ashes.

It takes a robust partner to stand up to Big Peat, but blue cheese is a companion up to the test. The high alcohol strength of Big Peat cuts through the oiliness of the cheese, whilst the complex, creaminess of the cheese unveils layer upon layer of ashy, smokey flavours in the whisky.
