Chateau de Pierreux, (Reserve) Brouilly 2019 - August 2021 Decanter review

Château de Pierreux is a 77-hectare estate situated in the heart of Brouilly. It is one of the finest domaines in the Beaujolais region, with a magnificent château and winery built during the Renaissance. It has been managed by Jean-Claude Boisset since the 2002 vintage. The vineyards are planted on highly absorbent sandy soil, consisting of pink granite sprinkled with blue volcanic rocks. The 50 year old vines are gobelet, or bush-trained at a density of around 10,000 vines per hectare.

The vineyards of the Beaujolais region are very hilly. Château de Pierreux's vines are planted in shallow, well-drained pink granitic, schistous, and siliceous soils. The vines are aged are sustainably farmed in order to limit the use of chemicals in the vineyards, reestablish the vines' physiological balance and protect the environment.

Winter started cold and dry, however February and March were mild. April was cold and rainy although was followed by low levels of rainfall again in May and June. Summer arrived in July with hot and stormy weather. The dry conditions in the spring meant despite the heavy rains, the vineyard remained healthy through to harvest was completed on September 7th.

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were carefully sorted to ensure a high quality. The grapes were 100% destemmed and were then fermented in concrete vats for 12 to 15 days at temperatures of 22-28°C. Pumpovers were completed twice daily during this period. The wine was aged in large oak barrels for 12 months prior to bottling.

Deep purple nuances. Fine, elegant nose with notes of iris, violet and peony. Soft and round on the palate with length revealing floral and dark berry flavours of blueberry and blackcurrant.
