In 1864, Uiterwyk Estate became the property of the De Waal family, which by then had been making wine for four generations in Cape Town and Constantia. Today, the ninth generation of this family - and the fifth generation on Uiterwyk - is maintaining their winemaking tradition. C.T. de Waal was the first person ever to make a wine from Pinotage grapes when he made an experimental barrel of Pinotage in 1941, sixteen years after the variety was created by Prof. Abraham Perold. De Waal have a vineyard of Pinotage bush vines that are now 68 years old - it is the oldest existing Pinotage vineyard in the world! This wine is made using these vines.
