Chante Cigale Chateauneuf Du Pape 2016 (1x75cl)

Domaine Chante Cigale is one of the most important family estates of Chateauneuf du Pape. Alexandre Favier is now carefully running the winery with respect to his family's winemaking heritage. It is is situated on the left bank of the Rhône, between Orange and Sorgues, on a variety of soils which contain a high proportion of ‘galets.’ These are the large stones of Châteauneuf-du-Pape which heat up during the day and release their heat at night, allowing the grapes to achieve maximum ripeness. The estate stretches over more than 40 hectares. This land is divided into 45 parcels, scattered all over this exceptional terroir. The diversity of its soils and grape varieties allow for the creation of unique and exceptional wines. Alexandre Favier and his team take good care of every step during the wine's production themselves, respecting the spirit of the Domaine.

The vines used to create this wine are around 60 years old. A sympathetic vinification is carried-out, which is respectful to the entire grape to preserve its fruit and minerality, the identity of the  vineyard and a deeply rooted terroir. This is a hands-off style of vinification in which every move counts and it is carried out with precision, respect and passion. Firstly fermentation lasts about five days. The wine is then allowed to macerate for between 21 - 24 days. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur naturally.  This wine was then aged in their cellar for approximately 24 months in a combination of vats (70%) and burgundian pieces / casks (30%) before the final step of the blending: this crucial and fascinating moment will reveal the entire complexity of this great “terroir”.

Deep ruby in colour with a wonderful nose of spice and dark fruits this is a real winter warmer. The palate is rich and ripe with layers of fruit and spice supported by fine tannins. Some of our suggestions for matching food to this wine are: warm cabbage salad with roquefort and peppered bacon, roast leg of lamb with mustard and red wine sauce or spiced venison steaks with red-cabbage confit and red-wine sauce.

Chateau de Chambert Cahors Grand Vin 2012 - IWC 2019 award and review

Château de Chambert lies 30 kilometres west of the town of Cahors, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Owned and run by Philippe Lejeune since 2007, with the additional support of consultant winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, the estate has already garnered considerable attention in France and is top critic Michel Bettane’s ‘One to Watch’. The elegant, modern wines are made from the deep-coloured Malbec variety, which traditionally produced the ‘black wines’ of Cahors.

Chambert’s vineyards are situated at the highest part of the South Quercy limestone plateau, at an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level. The soil is mainly clay with a red iron oxide component. This is ideally suited to producing a refined style of wine that is fresh in its balance (similar soils can be found in the Chablis Grand Cru vineyards). Due to its location between the Atlantic and Mediterranean the area has a unique meso-climate which takes effect especially towards harvest when hot winds from Africa warm up the grapes, aiding ripening. Leaf-thinning and green harvesting take place where necessary, to ensure lower yields of well exposed fruit. The vines are 25 years old and yields are low at around 28 hectolitres per hectare. All grapes are hand-harvested.

The 2012 season was marked by heterogeneity. A dry winter period led to an unusually warm month of March with temperatures above average. Bud-burst took place at the beginning of April and was immediately disturbed by a month of cool and wet weather. May was warmer and drier than usual, June was rainy but then July was relatively dry. This four-month period of unstable weather took its toll on the vines and delayed veraison to the 20th August. The period of post-veraison was warm and dry and eased the disease pressure, and advanced the maturity of the grapes. Harvest began on 10th October and finished with the top parcels a week later, in perfect harvesting conditions.

Each plot was vinified separately. Gentle extraction occurred through a combination of slow pumping and plunging, before a slow fermentation with indigenous yeast at 25-30°C. The wine underwent post-fermentation maceration for 30 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels where the wine aged for 14 months (50% new French oak barrels, 25% second use barrel, 25% third use barrel).

Complex characteristics of red fruit, violets and silky round tannins. A generous and rich wine with a powerful structure. Ripe tannins and dense fruit is accompanied by elegant acidity, giving the wine tremendous potential for ageing.

Chateau De Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 2015 (1x 75cl)

Château de Pibarnon sets the standard for greatness not only in Bandol but also for wines the world over. Pibarnon Bandol is famed for growing ever more elegant and supple with time.

With its perch at the highest point in the appellation, its impeccable terroir and unforgettable amphitheatre of vines, Pibarnon crafts the finest Mourvèdre-based wines in Bandol. This breathtaking yet rugged region is exceptionally suited to showcasing the power and beauty of this southern red grape.

Bandol was no more than a backwater when Catherine and Henri de Saint Victor purchased Pibarnon in the late 1970s. Recognizing the region’s potential, however, the visionary couple worked tirelessly for some 30 years, landscaping and crafting ever better wines. By the 1990s, Pibarnon was making the region’s top reds, a status today maintained under their son, Eric de Saint Victor. Henri passed away in 2013.

The vineyards overlook the valley, facing the sea, covering terraces upon terraces up to 300 metres altitude, on slopes forming a vast amphitheatre, sheltered from the mistral. The high altitude of the vineyards means cool nights and slow ripening of the grapes. The Château de Pibarnon vineyard is planted on very old and highly calcareous, Triassic ground. This limestone enhances the bouquet in the wine. It also allows the extraction of very fine and elegant tannins. Moreover it is this which causes the freshness and minerality, giving an exemplary type and flavour. Château de Pibarnon focuses on 12 main plots, all located at the summit of the estate including Bel Air, Jourdan, Pointes-Blanches and le Cirque.

This wine has been made using 90% Mourvedre and 10% Grenache.

Chateau de Rouillac, Pessac-Leognan 2012 (1x75cl)

Based in Pessac Leognan on the left bank of Bordeaux, the elegant and noble Château de Rouillac is imbued with a historic past. In the 19th century Château de Rouillac was owned by Baron Haussmann, who produced a delicious wine which is said to have delighted Napoleon III. The current proprietor Laurent Cisneros and his family took up the reins of this magnificent property in 2009, passionately championing sustainable and environmental practices. The property has had a long association with horses and possesses beautiful stables; Titan their huge and impressive horse is still used today to plough the exceptional gravel soils in the vineyard. Renowned oenologist Eric Boissenot produces wines which are delicately blended with the utmost precision to reveal their optimum expression.

The property is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is right at the entrance to the city of Bordeaux. The vineyard sits on an exceptional terroir of gravel. The estate covers 36 hectares of which 26 hectares are planted with vines. The vines are cultivated sustainably, with respect for the environment and the biodiversity on the estate. Herbicides are not employed; instead the vineyard is cultivated in the traditional manner. The grapes are manually harvested.

2012 was a challenging vintage characterised by high rainfall. However, a hot, dry period during the summer promoted the growth cycle and ripening of the grapes. 2012 was a grower’s vintage; meticulous work in the vineyard reduced the risks of disease pressure and allowed for a harvest of good quality. Harvest dates were carefully chosen, resulting in good quality fruit with silky tannins. Harvest took place 1st to 12th October 2012.

Fermentation and maceration of the skins took place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats, lasting for 20 to 25 days. During vinification daily pump-overs and punching down of the cap took place in order to extract colour and tannins; and impart structure and flavour. 100% of the wine was transferred to French oak barrels, one third of which was new and the wine underwent malolactic fermentation; two thirds of the wine were aged in barrels of one year.

Cabernet Sauvignon 58%, Merlot 42%.

A concentrated deep red wine, with ripe red and black fruit flavours enhanced by spicy notes of cloves and subtle truffle flavours. Silky smooth on the palate with fine and elegant tannins and a long, succulent finish.

Chateau L Evangile 2006 (1x 75cl)

The Léglise family from Libourne founded the property that was to become Château L’Évangile. They were actively involved, around the middle of the 18th century, in the creation of Pomerol’s vineyards. In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired L’Évangile from the Ducasse family with a view to ensuring that the property was looked after to the same high standard. Their initial influence included a more refined selection of the Grand Vin, and the creation of Blason de L’Évangile as a second wine. Efforts were also undertaken to improve the vineyard with a restoration and partial renewal plan that was launched in 1998. The complete renovation of the vat room and the cellar, which was finished in 2004, completed the property’s new configuration.

Château L’Evangile’s wines are described in an old edition of “Grand Vins de Bordeaux”, as “full-bodied and elegant, with incomparable finesse”. The same can still be said today.

Rigorous selection is carried out at Château L’Évangile and the grapes from each plot are separated into batches in order to judge their potential and whether they are suitable for use in the wine at the end of fermentation. Traditional and modern winemaking methods are both used in all of the winery’s operations. Fermentation in vats is carried out using the traditional method of pumping over and controlled maceration, with frequent tasting. Once fermentation is completed, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 18 months.

The mild spring in 2006 was followed by lovely weather in July and quite a cool August. These conditions produced nicely ripened grapes with lots of freshness. At the beginning of September the sun came back in full force, bringing the phenolic maturity to a perfect finish.

Chateau Larose Perganson Haut-Medoc 2014 magnum (1x1.5L)

Château Larose Perganson lies in Saint-Laurent-Médoc, on the border of Pauillac and Saint-Julien, next to the Château Latour vineyards. Here, winemaker Frank Bijon is producing a Cru Bourgeois that rivals the Classed Growths of the Médoc. Jean-Pierre du Pontet, the King's Council, purchased the Perganson estate at auction in 1719, which later became Pontet-Perganson when it was inherited by his youngest son. The Larose name first appeared in the 1830s, after Henry Delaroze became the owner in 1815. Sustainability has been key to Larose Perganson since 1999 and it is the first (and only) vineyard in Europe to have been awarded the highest Exemplary Level in Sustainable Development. They are so dedicated to sustainability that they keep bees on their property to help the declining bee population.

Château Larose Perganson's 35 hectares of vineyards are located in St Laurent Médoc on Médoc's finest gravelly soils: Günzian gravel from the Quaternary and Pyrenean gravel. It produces consistently awardwinning wines at a fraction of the price of its illustrious neighbours (Château Latour).

An exceptionally cold and damp summer threatened the 2014 vintage. However, an unseasonably warm and dry autumn brought the vintage back on track. Highly perfurmed with good acidity, the reds are fresh with supple tannins, perfect for both early drinking and cellaring.

Grape sorting was carried out twice (post-harvest and after destemming), to ensure only the best grapes were used for fermentation. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain the primary bright fruit with gentle punch downs to minimise extraction of hard drying tannins. The wine was then blended and aged in French barriques, 50% new, for 12 to 16 months.

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot.

This wine is intense ruby in colour with crimson hues. The nose shows hints of black berries with spicier notes coming to the fore. On the palate, the wine is full bodied with polished elegant tannins, great structure and a very long finish.

Chateau Tour Des Gendres Anthologia Rouge 2008 (1x75cl)

Chateau Tour Des Gendres has been owned by the family of Luc De Conti since the early nineteenth century when Luc’s grandfather Vincenzo moved to Bergerac from Italy. A wonderful character and a fine wine-maker, Luc de Conti’s exuberant wines reflect his personality. Luc is a true Vinarchiste, looking for purity and intensity, the maximum expression of the potential of the grapes. In the vineyard the soil is nourished with seaweed and silica treatments to encourage microbial activity. According to him the soil is lifeless (“a cadaver”) and it is a fifteen-year process to rid the ground of pollutants. Manual picking and selection of ripe grapes is essential; on the top cuvées there are several tries in the vineyard, and the wine will only be released if it reaches the highest of standards. The blends will also change according to the physiological ripeness of the grapes. This vigneron even riddles the grapes on the vine, giving them a quarter turn. Madness or pertinence or the countenance of sublime perfection? They are certified organic and use careful vinification techniques to ensure the truest expression of the terroir and vintage.

The Anthologia Rouge is fermented in 500-litre barrels which are turned (roulage) to give a gentler extraction. Power and sweetness allied to refinement and purity – the crowning achievement of a true Vinarchiste.

80% Merlot, 20% Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc (exact blend of these last three is not specified, but thought to be around 10%/8%/2%).

Chateau Tour Des Gendres Anthologia Rouge 2008 is predominantly Merlot with intense almost opaque appearance with a complex nose of black berry fruit, liqorice and spice. Full bodied with firm yet sweet tannins and a rich, opulent finish. It is easy to understand why Luc’s wines are considered some of the best and most exciting of the region.

Clau de Nell Grolleau 2015 - January 2019 Decanter review

The vineyards at Clau de Nell have been cultivated biodynamically since 2000. A period of financial difficulty led the previous proprietors to seek help from the late Anne-Claude Leflaive and her husband, Christian Jacques. In 2008, the Leflaive-Jacques family purchased Clau de Nell, which at the time had not produced any wine for three years. Since then, Clau de Nell has enjoyed a successful revival with ex-sommelier Sylvain Potin making the wine and Christian running the domaine.

The domaine is situated in Anjou and is comprised of 8.5 hectares of red varieties planted on a south-facing knoll at 90 metres altitude. The vines range in age from 30 to 90 years old and are low yielding (on average 25 hl/ha). There are five hectares of Cabernet Franc, two hectares of the native Grolleau and one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon. They also planted 1.5 hectares of Chenin Blanc in 2012 which produced its first vintage in 2015.

All the grapes were hand harvested and 100% destemmed. Fermentation was carried out using indigenous yeasts in oak barrels with gentle punch downs. The wines were then aged for 18 months in old barrels purchased from Domaine Leflaive. The wines were bottled without fining or filtration on fruit days, according to the biodynamic calendar. Minimal sulphur dioxide was used because Sylvain says he likes his wine to taste clean and ‘like wine’.

This wine is 100% Grolleau.

The Grolleau is crisp and fragrant with blueberry and blackberry aromas. It has a bright acidity with a lingering attractive spice on the finish.

Domaine Antoine Olivier, Pommard 2016 (1x 75cl)

Antoine Olivier was founded at the end of the 1960s, from a few vineyards left by Antoine Chevalier Moreau to his grandson, Hervé Olivier. Hervé began extending the estate by purchasing historic, old vineyards across Santenay, some of which had not been used for a century, paying particular attention to famous white wine vineyards. The quality of these soils is now recognised in a series of brilliant wines, in particular the exceptional white Santenay, something of a rarity in what is predominantly a red wine growing area. Today, Hervé’s grandson Antoine Olivier and his sister Rachel manage the estate. They are dedicated growers and follow organic practices in the vineyard. Their philosophy is to combine modernity with respect for the Burgundian soils and this stunning collection wines really showcases this.

The appellation of Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay. The grapes for this cuvée come from Noizons terroir, which is situated on the eastern side of the Pommard appellation. The vineyard is managed with respect for the unique attributes of each site’s terroir and is farmed sustainably and organically, although it is not certified. Some biodynamic philosophies are also followed. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted prior to vinification.

Traditional Burgundian vinification took place with minimal intervention. The grapes were vinified as whole clusters. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts and without any ‘pigeage’ or punching down of the cap. The wine was 100% barrel aged for 12 months: 50% was aged in new oak, 50% in one year old oak. The wine then rested for a further six months in tank, prior to being bottled, without fining or filtration.

A full-bodied and textured Pommard, showing a lovely purity of fruit, complemented by a touch of aromatic spice from oak ageing. Serve with game and red meats.

The vineyard is managed with respect for the unique attributes of each site’s terroir and is farmed sustainably and organically, although it is not certified. Some biodynamic philosophies are also followed. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted prior to vinification.

Classic red Burgundy. This is a beautifully perfumed and delicate Pinot Noir, with fine red fruit tones and a fleshy texture. Long and elegant on the finish. Serve with Sunday roast and all the trimmings.

Domaine Chevalier Ladoix Rouge 2016 (1x 75cl)

Domaine Chevalier Ladoix 2015 - December 2017 Decanter review

Domaine Chevalier is a 15-hectare, family domaine situated in Ladoix, in the north of the Côte de Beaune. Established in 1850, it is now run by Claude Chevalier and his daughters, Julie and Chloé. Claude's whites have the mealy and mineral quality that typifies great Burgundy, at a relatively modest price. The style combines the taut, steely feel of Chablis but with the fruit intensity, finesse and hints of riper stone fruit of the Côte de Beaune. His red wines have incredible purity and elegance.

Ladoix is in the northern Cote de Beaune, adjoining the Côte de Nuits vineyards. The village lies at the foot of the Mont de Corton where the soils are chalky marl.

Low yields and warm weather in 2015 allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial.

Vinification was done in the traditional way, with fermentation taking place in vat. The wine was aged in oak barrels, with no new wood for 12 months. It was rested and bottled in January.

The Domaine Chevalier Ladoix Rouge is a lovely ruby garnet in colour, characteristic of Pinot Noir, with soft red fruit perfumes of rasperries and red cherries and excellent depth of flavour. Fine, ripe tannins and a long, delicately perfumed finish.
