Swinney, Frankland River Riesling 2019 - 2019-2020 reviews

___

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are finding a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with viticulturalist wizard Lee Haselgrove tending the vines and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

The fruit was hand-picked from block C and D of our Powderbark vineyard in Frankland River with careful attention to eliminate any bunches with excessive sun exposure. The fruit was whole bunch pressed, lightly settled and then naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks to achieve a vibrant and expressive reflection of the purity of Frankland River Riesling. Following fermentation the wine rested on its lees for four months to both preserve freshness and build texture prior to bottling.

Riesling 100%.

Residual sugar = ~2g/litre.

Striking pale straw with green hues, the wine is vibrant and intense with jasmine blossom, lychee, candle wax and honey suckle. The palate is medium bodied with an intense and textural pithy, briny, mouthfeel. Mandarin, lemon grass and white nectarine fruits are balanced by cut lime acidity, driving through to a powerful, long finish.
