Franz Haas Moscato Rosa `Schweizer` half bottle 2017 (1x 37.5cl)
The Haas family has been growing grapes in Montagna in the province of Bolzano in the Alto Adige for generations. However, it is only with Franz, the current proprietor, that they have begun to produce and bottle quality wines. Franz studied at Geisenheim before working as a broker of Italian wines into the German market. After several years, he took over the running of the family business. Franz Haas goes to tremendous lengths to grow good grapes and then strives to preserve the flavours of the fruit during winemaking. As a result, the wines that he produces are infused with great character and show a rare purity and balance on the palate.
The Moscato Rosa vines, a native aromatic variety of the Alto Adige, grow at altitudes of 250-300 metres in a well-ventilated area in the municipality of Egna. The wind is essential to prevent the stagnation of humidity which would cause the development of mould such as Botrytis. For this very delicate variety, the development of Botrytis must be prevented because its presence would cause a reduction of the aromatic components. The vineyards selected for Moscato Rosa are south and south-west facing and are made up of a mixture of porphyry, sand, clay and chalk.
The Moscato Rosa was vinified as a red wine, with a short maceration on the skins to extract more colour. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and was stopped by reducing the temperature. After fermentation, the wine remained in tank until it was ready for bottling and then spent a further six months in bottle before release.
Moscato Rosa is a bright ruby red wine with fragrances of a lively freshness and an intense aromatic bouquet with notes of rose, cloves, cinnamon and orange peel. On the palate the wine fascinates with complexity and elegant structure and a fascinating interplay between acidity, sweetness and tannin.
Moscato Rosa is a very special wine which is ideal for extravagant pairings and to drink on its own. It matches perfectly with dry chocolate cakes, with the typical Austrian Linzer Torte and with chocolate-desserts.
