Grosset Springvale Clare Valley Riesling 2017 (1x75cl)

The previous 2016 vintage - alas now sold out - was awarded 95 points and Outstanding status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their April 2018 edition article entitled Chablis Alternatives: 30 Fresh Wines (see blue link below). It's worth noting, however, that the 2017 Clare Valley Riesling vintage is already more highly regarded than that of 2016.

Grosset Springvale Clare Valley Rieesling 2016 - April 2018 Decanter review

Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 in the historic township of Auburn, Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish and functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking. Jeff is best known for his iconic Rieslings, and he has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Valley Riesling. By combining a disciplined approach and decades of experience, Grosset consistently achieves the purest expression of variety and place.

The six hectare Springvale vineyard (ACO certified organic) is situated at Watervale’s highest elevation (465 metres) on a gradual, mainly north-facing slope where the soil is thin red loams interspersed with shale over limestone. This highly sustaining profile insulates the drought sensitive riesling vines, which produce lime-green medium-sized berries.

2017 is Grosset's third consecutive outstanding vintage. This makes 2017, 2016 and 2015 the best run of seasons they have ever experienced. The 2017 vintage was a full month later than the previous two. It was almost European in character with much higher rainfall during the growing season.

The organic grapes were hand harvested and delivered promptly to the winery in small parcels, where they were crushed and destemmed. The fruit was then gently pressed and settled in tank for five days at 0°C. The free run juice was inoculated with neutral Champagne yeasts to preserve the natural expression of the vineyard in the final wine. A strong fermentation was carried out at low temperature in stainless steel tanks for clean, pristine varietal characters. Blending of the wine occured over a number of weeks before bottling in July 2017.

The 2017 'Springvale' is more intensely primal than in most vintages. While not as exhuberant as the 'Polish Hill', it entices with lime and lemon blossom aromas. There's layer after layer of mouth-puckering lime juice flavours, tight structure, spine-tingling acidity and shaley minerally notes that linger. It's an outstanding 'Springvale', fine, intense, pure and dry.
