Jaboulet (Northern Rhone) - 2018 vintage release

We've long had an association with - and huge respect for - Jaboulet (aka Paul Jaboulet Aîné) of the Northern Rhône. As institutions of the Rhône and its appellations - and of Old World wine in general - they sit in the very upper tier.

The wines - and especially their flagship, their standard-bearer, the La Chapelle Hermitage - are some of the best known labels and names in French wine.

The 2018 vintages of Jaboulet's higher-echelon wines from across the Northern Rhone appellations - Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage, St Joseph, Cote-Rotie, Cornas and Condrieu - both reds and whites (where allowed) - are to be released late this summer ...

... reaching us and you in late September or early October. Please note that they are not yet bottled and not immediately available. There's more on the wines below.

We are taking orders (and payment!) for these wines from now until noon on Friday 29th May, these orders then being reserved with Jaboulet for bottling, and delivered by us to customers as above (subject to usual Exel delivery charges and exemptions; these wines combinable with others as long as all delivered together in October!).

One of the great advantages in ordering from us is that we don't insist that you take full cases of 6. If you want just 1,2,3, etc bottles, perhaps to make up a mixed case of Jaboulet 2018s, you can happily do that. We'll be doing it ourselves...

The big questions, of course, are "How good was 2018 in the Northern Rhône?" and "Should I get take some of these wines?".

The latter is a personal question, of course. If you like the wines of the Rhone and have the budget, the 2018s will definitely not disappoint.

Decanter (www.decanter.comhere rated 2018 in the Northern Rhone a 4-out-of-5 vintage. Their view, summed up as "very hot and dry, resulting in a plentiful ripe crop. Many wines with low acidity and potent alcohol, but those that could achieve balance made impressive wines".

(It would be our observation that it is these hotter years in the Northern Rhône that go on to be seen more positively still as the wine mature).

Wine Advocate were perhaps more buoyant still: we've a condensed report of their view here.

Perhaps most powerful of all are the reports and reviews on the individual 2018 wines from Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling. These appear on the individual product pages (click bottle icons at foot of page).

There are 9 wines on offer for delayed delivery. They include

- the hallowed La Chapelle Hermitage;

- and its excellent, superb-value 'second wine' counterpart, the La Maison Bleue Hermitage;

- Don't miss the Crozes Hermitages - the two reds (Domaine de Roure and Domaine de Thalabert) year-after-year stand head-and-shoulders above the typical standard of Crozes and match that of many Hermitages proper. The Thalabert is a true Exel Wines stalwart!

- The Mule Blanche white Crozes (taken from the Thalabert plot) is also partiularly good. This, in fact, is already in the UK for order within a few days. The two 2018 Cotes du Rhônes are also in immediate supply.

There is precious little of the Cote-Rôtie or St-Joseph, note. If you're after these, move quickly.

Also, all wines can also be supplied as magnums. If you would prefer these, please contact us on communications@exelwines.co.uk. Note that they very seldom work out as better economy, but do typically cellar rather better/for longer (if your racks will hold them).

"Jaboulet's 2018 Hermitage La Chapelle features scents of crushed stone, violets and cassis. It's a classic trio, backed by a wine that's full-bodied, rich and powerful yet also airy, somehow carrying intense plum and black olive flavors without any sense of heaviness or excess weight. Then the wine finishes long and softly dusty, with tannins that accentuate its savory character, picking up delicious hints of licorice at the very end. The proportion of new oak has been trimmed back to a very reasonable 20% and is hardly noticeable in the wine. 98-100 points". Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, December 2019

It was for many years run by Gérard Jaboulet, who was one of the great ambassadors for Rhône wines, tirelessly travelling the world and spreading the Gospel according to the Holy Grail of Hermitage. He died suddenly in 1997 and the firm has been run by Philippe & Jacques Jaboulet, until 2006 when the real estate entrepreneur Jean-Jacques Frey purchased the wine company.

The Frey family has  of long standing in the Champagne region and are owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux.  Jacques and Nicolas Frey are now involved in the day-to-day running of the Maison Jaboulet, while Caroline Frey (pictured right), the eldest daughter, is at the helm of the wine-making team. Under Caroline’s leadership, in 2006, the vineyards earned Sustainable Farming status while Jaboulet's winegrowing is in the course of conversion towards biodynamic certification. 

Jaboulet produces wine from 26 different appellations in the Rhône. Hermitage La Chapelle is named after the small hermit's chapel built in 1235 on the Hermitage hill, the wine regularly rivals Bordeaux 1st Growths for its incredible array of flavours - fruity and enticing when young but acquiring complex leathery and gamey overtones with age.

La Chapelle comes from the blending of the greatest western terroirs of the Hermitage hill. The Roucoules terroir, as well as the generous side of the Meal and Les Greffieux, are complemented by the Bessards deepness and Varogne's freshness.

The autumn of 2017 was exceptionally dry. Winter 2017-18 was moderately watered and did not fully offset the water deficit. The winter season was very cool, temperatures returned to normal at the beginning of April resulting in later budburst. The whole spring was regularly and correctly watered. Temperatures remained and sometimes were above normal. These alternating hot and rainy periods led to very rapid growth of the vine. Phenology progressed very quickly and the season became early. At the beginning of July, temperatures were getting hotter/ the sanitary state of the vineyard was excellent, berries were juicy, well inflated and often larger than last year. The few rains in August allowed to unlock the situation and the harvest of September took place in a summer atmosphere under particularly heavy heat.

Along the Petite Pierrelle street, not far from the stream of Torras and the road where the blackbirds sing, lies the pretty Maison Bleue. Leaning against the Hermitage Hill, one of the most beautiful vineyards in the world, this small stone house with blue shutters was once a real haven of peace for the winegrowers: a place to work, rest and share located in the heart of a legendary terroir. Today, this house of winegrowers has regained new youth. Winegrowers and horses take there shelter from time to time. Grapes come from the most easterly vineyards of the hill, where soils are deeper, less stony and slope flatter.

It was built in 1235 by the knight Gaspard de Sterimberg after he gained the permission of the ‘White Queen of Castille’ to establish his hermitage on this hill after being injured during the Albigensian crusade of 1224.

Located in the commune of Gervans, to the north of Tain l’Hermitage, this estate houses a very beautiful valley of 1.4 hectare which turns out to be a fantastic ecological habitat with an enormous potential.

The Crozes Hermitage vineyard is the largest of all the Northern Rhône Valley appellations and extends over 11 communes situated in the Drôme, on the left bank of the Rhône. A former farmhouse that belonged to the Gounon family, the building and its enclosure now house Jaboulet's first LPO (= French RSPB) biodiversity refuge, Clos Gounon.

Records exist from before the French Revolution of Cote Rotie wines being shipped to the princely tables of England, Russia, Prussia – and France, of course. It is said that Lord Maugiron divided his estate between his two daughters, one blonde, one brunette, which is how the wines came to be names Cote Brune and Cote Blonde. Vineyards are located in Cote Blonde which has a reputation for producing smooth, well-rounded wines.

Jaboulet produces some of the world's greatest wines in the Rhone Valley with Hermitage La Chapelle being its most famous wine. It was for many years run by Gérard Jaboulet, who was one of the great ambassadors for Rhône wines, tirelessly travelling the world and spreading the Gospel according to the Holy Grail of Hermitage. He died suddenly in 1997 and the firm has been run by Philippe & Jacques Jaboulet, until 2006 when the real estate entrepreneur Jean-Jacques Frey purchased the wine company.

The Frey family has  of long standing in the Champagne region and are owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux.  Jacques and Nicolas Frey are now involved in the day-to-day running of the Maison Jaboulet, while Caroline Frey (pictured right), the eldest daughter, is at the helm of the wine-making team. Under Caroline’s leadership, in 2006, the vineyards earned Sustainable Farming status while Jaboulet's winegrowing is in the course of conversion towards biodynamic certification. 

Jaboulet produces wine from 26 different appellations in the Rhône. The Crozes Hermitage vineyard is the largest of all the Northern Rhône Valley appellations. It extends over 11 communes situated in the Drôme, on the left bank of the Rhône. This wine comes from the plots called Conflans, one of the best terroirs of the appellation. The name of the cuvée comes from the draught animals that worked on these plots. These old vines, planted in high density, required the work of a mule, finer, much more agile and resistant than the traditional horse. These mules shaped these vines and left their mark through this slender and distinguished wine.

The autumn of 2017 was exceptionally dry. Winter 2017-18 was moderately watered and did not fully offset the water deficit. The winter season was very cool, temperatures returned to normal at the beginning of April resulting in later budburst. The whole spring was regularly and correctly watered. Temperatures remained and sometimes were above normal. These alternating hot and rainy periods led to very rapid growth of the vine. Phenology progressed very quickly and the season became early. At the beginning of July, temperatures were getting hotter/ the sanitary state of the vineyard was excellent, berries were juicy, well inflated and often larger than last year. It was then known under the name of vin de Mauves a local village that has its name from the colour mauve, purple in French. The monks in Tournon-sur-Rhone gave the wine its current name in the 18th century. Between 1956 and 1969, all the vineyards were united to form the AOC Saint Joseph. The first vintage of this cuvée is 2009. Grapes for this wine come from 1.5-hectare vineyard located in the historic heart of the Saint-Joseph vineyards, above Mauves and Tournon-sur-Rhone. This plot faces due south and comprises a granite soil broken down into gravelly earth.

On the right-bank of the Rhone, the vineyard sits on the Eastern slopes of the Massif Central in Cornas, which means ‘burnt earth’ in old Celtic. The abrupt, south-facing slopes form a natural amphitheatre that protects the vines from cold winds. Cornas’ vineyards are very old, dating from ancient times. The first terraces and chaillées (walls) were likely made by Romans. Legend has it that Charlemagne himself tasted the wine when travelling through Cornas in the year 840 and liked it so much that he had some sent on to his residence in Aix-la-Chapelle. Owned by Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aine since 1996, the first vintage of this cuvée is 1996. This estate is located on the top of the hill, near the little chapel of Saint-Pierre. The estate represents 3.9 ha on very steep graphite south-facing slopes.

At the beginning of the last century, only about 10 hectares of vineyards remained. The creation of a Condrieu AOC (a Protected Designation of Origin) in 1940, however, paved the way for the rebirth of Condrieu and its ascension to the greatest heights among the white wines of France today.

Paul Jaboulet Ainé Cotes du Rhone Rouge Secret de Famille 2018 (1x75cl)

Since the early 19th Century, Paul Jaboulet Ainé has been synonymous with quality wine in the Rhône Valley. Jaboulet’s Hermitages - white and red - and most of their upper wines - are the stuff of legend. The famous Rhone winery was bought by the Frey family in 2006. The Freys, owners of Chateau la Lagune in Bordeaux, saw the potential of the vineyards. They brought renewed energy to this corner of France and to one of its greatest names.

This, their “everyday” (if Jaboulet can ever be described as “everyday”) Côtes du Rhône brings all that winemaking experience to bear brilliantly for not much more than a tenner. 

Soils: Shingle with clay, stony “argillaceous limestone” soil, pebbles.

Traditional vinification with long vatting, controlled fermentation temperatures. Aged 75% in stainless steel tanks, 25% in large French oak vats for 12 months. Syrah (40%) and Grenache (60%).

It is elegant, fruity and full-bodied and brings together the Grenache and Syrah in a rather more powerful, spicy (yet balanced) form than we find with most Côtes du Rhône. The nose is characterized by notes of black fruit, exotic spices (curry and sandalwood) with a rounded and delicate mouthfeel.

NB: fans of Jaboulet's Parallele 45 red may like to note that this is exactly the same wine under a different (off-trade) label: the same is true of the Parallele 45/Secret de Famille white CdR.

Paul Jaboulet Aine Cotes du Rhone Blanc Secret de Famille 2018 (1x75cl)

In 1834, Antoine Jaboulet (1807-1864) started working the land in this region, creating a lasting link between the Jaboulet name and the Rhone over the generations. This famous Rhone winery was bought by the Frey family in 2006. The Freys, owners of Chateau la Lagune in Bordeaux, saw the potential of the vineyards. They have brought renewed energy to this corner of France. 

50% Grenache Blanc, 20% Marsanne, 20% Viognier, 10% Bourboulenc. This wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks before being aged for 2 to 3 months, 50% of which occurs in oak casks.

This wine is bright pale yellow in colour. It has fresh pear and stone fruit on the nose, with fine citrus acidity on the palate to balance the ample fruit intensity. It has a long yet appealing sherbet and pear finish. Like the better class of white Cotes du Rhones in which it belongs, it combines refreshing acidity (primarily from the Bourboulenc component) with a fuller body/mouthfeel (especially from the Marsanne and Viognier).
