Larry Cherubino The Yard Acacia Vineyard Shiraz 2016 (1x75cl)

Named ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy and water management, picking at the right time and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines which are the ultimate expression of site, made in small batches from hand harvested grapes. From delicate whites to opulent reds, all his wines have pure class and finesse.

Yields were low with most varieties achieving ripeness at a relatively low sugar levels in 2015. The fruit picked was of excellent quality, resulting in crisp and refreshing wines.

Larry Cherubino believes the magic of wine is its ability to express its provenance. In the pursuit of excellence he travels the world searching for grape clones suited to specific vineyard sites. He also pays meticulous attention in the vineyard. Herbicides are not used; instead, at Larry Cherubino they make their own compost to support the whole vineyard biology, which maintains healthy soils with good levels of microbial activity. The philosophy followed by Larry and his team considers the whole ecosystem, resulting in healthier, disease resistant vines. The grapes for this wine were planted in 1997, at a density of 1,350 vines per hectare. The vines are planted on a north facing site in the Acacia vineyard in soils that are predominantly lateritic.

The fruit was hand-picked, sorted and vinified in small lot fermenters. A moderate extraction took place to ensuring the fruit characters were fully expressed. The fruit was vinified for four months, before being aged in new and one year old oak for six months. Bottling was carried out early in order to preserve the fruit. The wine spent a minimum of 10 months in bottle prior to release.

A beautiful, inky deep red wine. The combination of spice, black fruits and oaky earthiness, make this a very complex and interesting Shiraz. Blueberry, black cherry and earthy notes carry across to the palate. Still young and ripe, the tannins are soft with good persistence and length, will mature well.

This is a great accompaniment to a whole shoulder of slow roasted lamb with a red wine reduction.
