L'Expressio del Priorat is a new label from Mas La Mola. Winemakers Jordi Masdeu and Alessandro Marchesan have aimed to produce a wine that offers the structure of classic Priorat while being ready to drink young, something we believe they have done with great success.
The fruit is sourced from various parts of the Poboleda district of Priorat, where the native Garnacha (here spelt Garnatxa) and Carignano varieties thrive in the unique microclimate and Licorella slate slopes. A small amount of Syrah adds complexity to the final blend. Long, warm, dry days and cool nights give perfect phenolic ripeness and good levels of natural acidity to balance the powerful character of the fruit. The average age of the vines is 20 years and they are farmed organically although they are not certified.
2015 was a great vintage for Priorat. In spite of some hail which fell during early Spring, summer brought a heatwave which promoted wonderful fruit set and veraison. Fears of it being too hot disappeared in August, when cool evenings and light rainfall alleviated vine stress and preserved acidity. There was still sufficient heat to continue maturity.
The L'Expressio vines were allowed to be a bit more vigorous in order to allow the fruit to ripen slowly and retain freshness. A rigorous selection of fruit took place in the vineyard, followed by a long cool maceration to extract the fine tannins. 30% of the wine was aged for a short period in oak, in order to round out the texture rather than add oak flavours. The rest remained in stainless steel for a few months before bottling.
A true expression of the Priorat region, powerful and seductive with blueberry fruit on the nose and the classic flinty mineral character of the wines from this region. Juicy and fruit driven with tender tannins and plenty of acidity. Smooth and luscious on the palate with a grippy texture, hints of herbs and spices and a long fleshy berry and black cherry finish.
