The grapes come from the slopes of the Loire Valley known as "The Garden of France". Very aromatic with pleasant flower and fruit fragrances recalling the flower of the vine and the fruit of the Sauvignon. On the palate it reveals a freshness and vivacity characteristic of grapes harvested at good maturity.

Nicolas' small vineyard is situated on the slopes of Veaugues, in the Sancerre appellation. Here, the vines benefit from better drainage as well as greater exposure to the sun, which is important at such a northerly latitude. The vines are 5-25 years old. Soils are typically clay and chalk, giving the structured, firm mineral style expected of Sancerre. 

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, without the use of oak. Nicolas sealed his wine with screwcap to maximise freshness and preserve the wine's perfumes. 

Pale lemon in colour with subtle green tints. On the nose, it is fresh and aromatic. On the palate, the wine has an attractive mineral quality, with a full body and refreshing acidity. The wine has the classic purity of citrus fruit, hay and nettles that is found in top quality Sancerre.

An elegant, fully dry Loire Chenin from the Fiefs Vendéens appellation; whereas much of the Loire’s better-known Chenins originate from way upstream in the Touraine or Anjou-Saumur, this comes from just where the river spills into the Atlantic below Nantes.

 

Indeed, Domaine Saint-Nicolas is precisely why Fiefs Vendéen is known. Michon are biodymanic producers and the Hauts des Clous is the epitome of their art. It has a progressive intensity with great tension and freshness, apple and peach aromas, a very smooth texture and long finish. There are not many dry Chenins like this.

In the village of Crézancy, seven kilometres west of Sancerre, the Sautereau family has been producing wine for nine generations. The winery is now being run by David Sautereau, who is producing modern, attractive wines that offer excellent value for money.

The Domaine's 15 hectares of vineyard are situated mainly in Crézancy, with a tiny proportion located in Bué and the village of Sancerre itself. The range of soils in this area (mainly chalk, with clay, flint and pebbles depending on which parcel of vines) allows David a good spread of different blending components for the wine, giving more complex and varied flavours.

The pressed grapes were fermented at between 20-21ºC followed by three months on lees. The wine remained in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for six months before bottling. The fairly cool fermentation ensured a particularly pure, fruity style while three months on the lees provided extra complexity and richness.

A clear pale lemon colour. Floral aromas develop into fresh grass. On the palate, refreshing acidity is balanced with fruit flavours of green apple and white grapefruit.

Domaine Vieux Vauvert Vouvray 2015 (1x 75cl)

Chenin Blanc is much the preserve of South African winemakers these days, but its origins lie in the Loire Valley. Savennières and Coteaux de Layon are perhaps the most famous Loire Chenins, but not always entirely ‘price accessible’. Vouvray provides an elegant and very affordable solution. The Vieux Vauvert is medium-dry (which is to say, there’s just a hint of sweetness) with a lively fresh finish. This wine has a plethora of flavours to share: among them, ripe apple, quince, lime and citrus blossom.

Domaines De Ladoucette Pouilly Fume 2013 (1x 75cl)

Benchmark Pouilly- Fumé from the historic Ladoucette family who have been producing wine in the region since the eighteenth century. The nose is a veritable explosion of fruit, floral, herbaceous and gunflint notes. On the palate they are joined by crunchy green apple, pear and more citrus fruit. Searing acidity keeps makes it last and last on the finish.
