Valdivieso Valley Selection (Single Valley Lot) Merlot, Gran Reserva 2012 (1x75cl)

Naming note: this wine has been available under two different names, hence the bracketed title(!), despite being the same wine. It was previously badged as the Single Valley Lot, but has now joined the fleet of Valley Selection wines from Valdivieso. Technically, the new label is entitled to draw grapes from a slightly wider area of the Rapel Valley, although we believe it will make almost no noticeable change to the wine.

Well-travelled Kiwi winemaker, Brett Jackson, has settled in Chile and much of Valdivieso’s success in recent years can be credited to his talent.

The vineyards for this wine are situated in the Rapel Valley sub-region of Chile's Central Valley where the hot, dry summers allow the grapes to ripen steadily before being harvested. These conditions deliver grapes with soft and silky tannins, distinctive aromas of currants and nuts.

Bright dark red with slight violet reflections. Aroma of fresh red fruits, cherry, plum and spicy notes. Soft and elegant, with silky tannins that deliver good volume and structure. Sweet and rich plum fruit with just a small hint of spice. It is full bodied with hints of cocoa and vanilla.

This is a rich and sumptuous Merlot at an incredible price.

ABV = 13.5%.

Vina Leyda Merlot Reserva 2018 (1x 75cl)

Few wineries encapsulate the development of coolclimate winemaking in Chile as well as pioneering Viña Leyda. The first producer to explore this coastal area, a rising star of New World winemaking, it took its name from the local railway station and later lent it to the entire DO of Leyda Valley. If Casablanca Valley represents Chile’s first tentative steps into cool-climate production, Leyda is a series of determined, confident strides: just 14km from the Pacific, the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah planted here express a crispness, minerality and fine-boned structure not found elsewhere in Chile’s viticultural paradise. Viña Leyda now has more than 200 hectares under vine, but the approach remains one of micromanagement, with detailed mapping of each vineyard and individual lot, and constant experimentation with clonal selection and viticultural techniques.

The fruits of those labours are reflected not just in their impeccable Reserva range, but in the exciting series of single vineyard and single plot wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and a trio of top-quality Pinot Noirs.

This wine is 100% Merlot.

Honest and fresh in style, this is a juicy and red fruit Merlot. It has sweet aromas of plums, cherries, and spices. Dark chocolate and tobacco notes add complexity in the nose. Well structured in the mouth, wide and dense, with ripe tannins, bright acidity and a pleasant finish.

Vina Ventisquero Clasico Merlot 2016 (1x75cl)

Head Winemaker Felipe Tosso joined Vina Ventisquero in 2000. After seriously considering alternate careers as a tennis pro and classical guitarist, he elected to enter the wine business, describing it as “one of my big passions because it’s more than work – it’s a lifestyle”. Tosso’s winemaking travels have taken him to Napa, Sonoma, Argentina, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, back to Concha Y Toro in Chile and then finally to Vina Ventisquero.

This is a wine with a deep ruby red colour as well as having intense aromas of cherries and ripe plums. It has good body and is smooth on the palate making it an ideal accompaniement to pasta dishes, ripe cheese and red meat.

ABV = 12.5%.

Vinnaioli Jermann Red Angel IGT, Pinot Nero 2016 (1x75cl)

Friuli, alongside Burgundy and New Zealand, is widely recognised as having one of the best suited climates for the production of high quality Pinot Noir. The grapes for Red Angel are all picked by hand and vinified in the traditional manner in small stainless steel tanks. Skin contact is key to producing top quality Pinot and Jermann has achieved an excellent balance between power and elegance. The wine is then aged in oak barriques before bottling and release.

This wine is made using Pinot Nero 95%, Merlot 5%.

Fragrant, with rich blueberries and fruits of the forest on the nose, this is an elegant, round and velvety Pinot Noir with loganberry-fruit character and cherryish undertones filling out the medium bodied, succulent palate.

It is the ideal summer red which will partner charcuterie and cheeses, as well as grilled salmon and any pasta dish; potatoes filled with ricotta cheese and butter; sausages with radicchio and charcuterie or smoked ham with grilled porcini mushrooms.
