Ovum Off the Grid 2014 - Sep 2016 Decanter review
Founded in 2011 by John House and Ksenija Kostic House, Ovum was born out of the realization that Riesling in Oregon has similar qualities one would find in world class growing regions. We set out to discover if our belief was indeed a reality, which meant producing wines that draw from all regions in Oregon. This diversity is necessary to discovering terroir through the conduit of Riesling. Our low intervention production method is a commitment to letting the vintage and vineyard come through, for better or worse. Native ferments, no subtractions or additions, except for SO2 - extended lees contact 8-9 months, for textural complexity. All of this is done in neutral barrels of acacia and oak, as well as cement egg.
At Ovum, each wine is produced the same way - if the wine smells and tastes different it has everything to do with the time and place, and little to do with the winemaker. Our hope is that through this minimal handling, and honest technique, we produce an old fashion wine in the modern world.
Smoky mineral, salty wet rock, yellow plum. Incredibly light for 12.5%, seemingly bone dry with delineated acid. Think Wachau Smaragd Riesling from a cool vintage.
