James Suckling said, "A balanced, fruity red with currant and cherry aromas and flavors. Medium body, round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Still a little reserved, but will open up beautifully. Drink now or hold", in awarding this 2016 vintage of the Seraselva 92 points....

... and Antonio Galloni gave it 93 points: "The 2016 Seraselva is the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend. It offers terrific depth in a style that deftly marries international varieties with a good deal of Chianti Classico structure and energy. Blackberry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs give the 2016 striking savory nuance to play off the dark fruit".

Documents in the archives of the abbey of Badia a Passignano, which owned Poggio al Sole until the 1960s, show that olives and wine were grown there as early as the 12th century. The Davaz family, which acquired Poggio al Sole in 1990, has grown wine in the Bündner Herrschaft in Switzerland since the 1970s. The eighteen contigous hectares of sloping schistose-clay vineyards are among the very highest in Chianti,  and are perfectly sheltered from the Tramontane wind by the surrounding oak forest. Alessandro Masnaghetti, the brilliant taster, journalist, and publisher of Enogea, believes that Poggio al Sole is one of the top three vineyard sites in all Chianti Classico.

Poggio al Sole is ineed best known for its excellent Chianti(s) Classico, so the owners were initially reluctant to plant Bordeaux varietals on their hill in Tuscany. But they can't argue with the results: Seraselva, the estate's 'Super-Tuscan' Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, has won over critics in Italy and around the world, this being all the more impressive given the fact that Poggio al Sole is a small production winery.

Here's Poggio al Sole's own data sheet/fiche technique on the Seraselva.

Poggio Al Sole 'Seraselva' IGT Toscana Rosso 2016 - fiche technique

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot.

The Seraselva wraps around the palate with lovely plumpness and juiciness. The taste is warm with notes of ripe fruits and spices. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and spices are pushed forward in an attractive, mid-weight wine to drink now and over the next few years. This is a fairly restrained style for a wine made from international varieties. Look for intense aromas and overall freshness.  Round and complex with ripe tannins; there is also a lovely taste of licorice on the finish.

This wine is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
