Poggio Al Tesoro Mediterra 2013 (1x75cl)
One of the most exciting estates to have emerged from Italy in recent years, Poggio al Tesoro is a 70 hectare property in Bolgheri acquired in 2002 by the Allegrini family. The first vineyard they bought, Le Sondraia, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented by them. It is 12 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Fruit for this wine is sourced from the six hectare Le Sondraie vineyard. The vines face west/south-west and are planted at an altitude of just 25 metres above sea level. Soils here are well drained and composed of clay and sandy silt with a high presence of magnesium and iron. The vines are seven years old, spur cordon trained with a very high density of planting (7,500 vines per hectare) producing low yields.
After de-stemming and soft pressing with partial rupture of the berries, fermentation and a 12 day maceration took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 26-28°C. After fermentation, the wine was aged for eight months in second use oak barriques where malolactic fermentation was allowed to take place.
A fragrant and intensely fruity red wine. Aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries are interwoven with more incisive peppery notes. The result of a winning blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Mediterra succeeds in the difficult task of expressing the rich complexity of Bolgheri with an easy-drinking, exceedingly pleasurable style.
