See here for the Exel video tasting.
Owned by the same family since 1899, Quinta De Santiago is operated by the fourth generation of winemakers of the Santiago family. For over 100 years, the family has produced wines, olive oil, fruits and milk for domestic consumption. In 2009, under the ownership of Mariazinha, her children and grandchildren gave life to a boutique winery, replicating their forefathers’ way of working. The first vintage of 2012 was marketised in 2014 after two years of aging and refining. Today, three generations of the Santiago family work with great enthusiasm, combining tradition and knowledge of ancestors with the innovation of young winemakers.
Situated in the stunning landscape of Monção and Melgaço, Quinta de Santiago is a boutique winery in Portugal, characterized by the Minho valley and rolling mountains. The winery cultivates its flagship Alvarinho, a native white grape variety, and produces top-quality white, rose and sparkling wines. The vineyards extend over 7.5 hectares. The rows of vines extend from the Minho valley and its tributaries, reaching the mountains and offering various terrains and are sited in the perfect microclimate for Alvarinho. Joana Santiago, the current owner and winemaker, works in the vineyards, accompanied by her family members, to produce these aromatic wines. Respecting the tradition and balancing the ecosystem, most of the vineyard work is by hand.
The selected grapes are hand-picked and carried in 20kg cases to the cellar. In the cellar, using a very traditional method, and applying all the knowledge transmited from Santiago ancestors, the goal is to produce a very high-quality wine, respecting its origin and originality. In a very patient way, this wine goes through pre-fermentation, a long skin maceration and controlled fermentation stage in steel. It follows an aging process sur lie with stages of homogenization (battonage) until it reaches bottling 8 months after harvest.
Displays citrus colour. The aroma is elegant and complex with notes of citrus, lychees and orange blossom. Rich, full-bodied, persistent with freshness and minerality typical of the variety.
The freshness and minerality make this wine the ideal pairing for starters, salads, sea fruits, shellfish, fish, Asian cuisine, white meat and cheeses. It should be served at a temperature between 10ºC and 12ºC.
