Ramon Bilbao Gran Reserva Rioja 2010 - March 2017 Decanter review
Established in 1924 and based in Haro, Ramón Bilbao has 180 vineyards spread across Rioja. Today, it is the fastest growing winery in the region and has firmly established itself as one of Spain’s most exciting and innovative producers. Born and bred in the region chief winemaker Rodolfo Bastida is a man who likes to push the boundaries and believes the future lies in trial and exploration.
The 2010 vintage enjoyed favourable weather which meant the conditions in the vineyard were perfect until the end of the growing season. Flowering and fruit set were slightly delayed but a good number of medium-size clusters were obtained. The grape harvest in October enjoyed dry and sunny weather which helped the grapes in reaching a high level of ripeness with excellent health thanks to the lack of pests and diseases.
This wine underwent 2 days of cold maceration, and a short fermentation over 8 days. Then there was a further 9 days of maceration on the skins. The wine spent 36 months ageing in American oak from Ohio, Missouri.
Made in a modern style and despite the 36 months in American oak, this is a deeply coloured blend of Tempranillo with 5% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano. It is a youthful, concentrated red wine with plenty of backbone and structure, fresh acidity and layers of ripe plum and blueberry fruit. It pairs well with roast lamb, red meats and richly sauced dishes.
