Vigneto San Lorenzo Rosso Conero Umani Ronchi 2014 (1x 75cl)

San Lorenzo takes its name from the vineyard of the same name in the municipality of Osimo from which it originates. With its outstanding impact in terms of flavour and the enfolding warmth of its rounded tannins, it is a wine which is intended to express all the potential of the combination between its terroir and the Montepulciano varietal. These characteristics are augmented by the contribution from the oak lasks which are kept in the picturesque cave at Osimo, in which San Lorenzo is aged.

The harvest is carried out by hand and normally takes place in the period from the end of September to the end of the first ten days of October. The grapes are destalked and lightly pressed, then undergo maceration for 10- 12 days in steel fermentation vats. As soon as the alcoholic fermentation is finished, the wine starts the malolactic fermentation. The wine then moves on to the ageing process. About 50% is aged in 5000-8000 litre oak lasks, and the rest in barriques on their third or fourth time of use, for a period of about 12 months. After assemblage, San Lorenzo rests in bottle for a further 6 months.

A rich, fruity and fully flavoured nose. On the palate it is smooth and mellow with a full, elegant, savoury character and a persistent, finely grained array of well integrated tannins, excellent balance and a firm, persistent finish.

Food matches for this wine include Venison and redcurrant sausages with spinach and Stilton mash, wild boar and porcini risotto, a mixed grill or any barbecued food will all benefit.

Adega Algueira Merenzao RIberira Sacra 2014 - January 2018 Decanter review

Adega Algueira is responsible for producing some of the most interesting and esoteric wines this side of the equator.

The estate's vineyards all lie on pure schist soils with very steep inclines, so many of the vineyards are terraced, meaning that virtually all work - including harvesting - is done by hand. Average vine age of the are 80 years.

Merenzao is the local Galician name for the grape: it is known as Trousseau in France and Bastardo in Portugal.

The grapes are (most unusually) trodden by foot in large oak vats in which fermentation is conducted with wild/natural yeasts. There is then a short post-fermentative maceration. Wines are aged in old French oak barrels for 12 months and a further 12 months in bottle.

Light, bright red. High-pitched red berry and floral scents are complemented by zesty mineral and peppery spice notes. Fresh, focused and spicy on the palate, offering fresh redcurrant and raspberry flavors and a refreshingly bitter touch of blood orange. Puts on weight with aeration and picks up a succulent herb nuance that carries through a long, mineral-laced and subtly tannic finish.

Akarua Pinot Noir 2013 (1 x 75cl)

The Skeggs family were among the first people to buy and plant vineyard land in Central Otago in the mid 1990s, so were lucky enough to acquire a superb north facing site in Bannockburn. Planted in 1996, this 50 hectare site has since provided the backbone of the Akarua wines. Due to the short growing season in Central Otago, site selection is one of the key elements in making a great wine, and Akarua have a site that is among the very best. Akarua was re-introduced after many years to Liberty Wines by Tony Jordan, who makes their sparkling wines. Tony built Domaine Chandon in Australia, and is one of the world's leading experts in sparkling wine production. He has been enamoured with the potential for Central Otago to make top quality fizz for quite a while, and is now doing so with Akarua.

All the Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from Akarua's 50 hectare site on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, which lies at 270 metres above sea level. The soil here is young alluvial schist based sand/silt and sandy loams overlaying schist rock. The vines are 16 years old.

The grapes were hand picked and 90% were destemmed. Pre-fermentation maceration took place over five days, with temperatures peaking at 31°C. Punch downs took place twice daily and post fermentation maceration lasted six days. The wine spent 10 months in French barriques, 30% of which were new.

Deep bright ruby in colour. The nose displays intense black fruit flavours and the complexity that Bannockburn Pinot Noir is renowned for, with haunting aromatics of bramble fruits and spice. The palate is elegantly balanced with red fruits and finely textured tannins. A wine with great poise and longevity.

Algueira Ribeira Sacra Mencia 2014 - Sep 2016 Decanter review

The Algueira winery is located in the midst of old chestnut and oak tree forests,on the banks of the river Sil, where the monks built their monasteries back in the 12th Century, A scenario which reflects the calm and peacefulness necessary for the creation of their wines.

Loads of red fruit aromatics, with flavours of raspberry jam and blueberry. Herbal notes and light balsamic aromas accompany the fruit. This wine is fresh and lively.
