Baron Philippe de Rothschild & Concha y Toro Almaviva 2011 (1x 75cl)

The new 2014 vintage was awarded 95 points and Outstanding status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their October 2017 edition review of South American 'Icon Wines' whites (see blue link below). We cannot obtain the 2014 yet but offer the 2011.

Baron PdR CyT Almaviva 2014 - October 2017 Decanter review

41 hectares of the Puente Alto vineyard were set aside in the 90's to produce top quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes for a joint venture with Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, aiming to create Chile's best red wine. With 3 years of maturity, it is beginning to reveal its pedigree with elegant, complex flavours and an aristocratic length & firm tannins. As Almaviva put it:

Made from a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties, in which Cabernet Sauvignon predominates, Almaviva is the result of a felicitous encounter between two cultures. Chile offers its soil, its climate and its vineyards, while France contributes its winemaking savoir-faire and traditions. The result is an exceptionally elegant and complex wine. Its launch was a major milestone in the development of Chilean wines, both in Chile itself and in the international market.

The 2011 vintage was dry, with only 176 mm of rainfall - around half of normal - between May and September 2010 in Puente Alto. The vintage was characterized by a late vegetative and fruit development, with all stages from budbreak to harvest occurring 10 to15 days later than usual. With lower-than-normal temperatures in March and April, the harvest finally occurred 10 days later than in average years. It started on April 5 with Merlot, and ended on May 25 with the last Carménère. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were picked between April 20 and May 20. The yields were lower than normal, especially for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. The Cabernet Sauvignon berries were particularly small. Together, these peculiar conditions favored great quality of fruit, elegant and pure, with a notable density of ripe, round tannins.

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Carmenere, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Barrel-aged for 17 months in new French oak.

The wine is a deep, intense ruby red. The nose, complex and subtle, reveals delicate and clean aromas of ripe cassis, fig and blackberries, accompanied by vanilla, cacao and toffee notes. The wine fills the mouth with smooth, well-refined and silky tannins, leaving an overall impression of balance, finesse, persistence and freshness. This is a pure, elegant and layered wine, harmoniously balanced by a great acidity.

Benoit Courault La Coulee 2015 (1x75cl)

Benoit Courault is a young and established vigneron in Faye d’Anjou, a little village south of Angers along the Layon river. Not a son of a winemaker, early on, Ben decided to study wine. He went to Beaune. From 2003 until 2006, he worked with the famous vigneron Eric Pfifferling from Domaine L’Anglore in Tavel.

Back in his native Loire, he found 5ha of vineyards and started his estate in 2006. Benoit’s aim is to propose authentic wines of excellent quality produced with a constant concern for the natural balance of life cycles, a statement that you will find on his label “Vignes cultives dans le respect du vivant”. Ben’s practices are simple and traditional, organic farming, use of the horse, natural vinification, very little use of sulfites, no fining and no filtration.

Beronia Rioja Reserva 2012 (1x 75cl)

The 2011 vintage was classified as excellent by the Rioja Regulatory Council.

The wine is produced following a selection of the best grapes from the oldest vineyards. The grapes undergo prefermentative maceration followed by a slow and controlled fermentation with periodic pumping over to extract colour and aromas.  Following this the wine is aged in mixed oak barrels of American Staves and French tops for 20 months to allow a paused and harmonic evolution.  The American oak gives a sweet character of vanilla and coconut while the French oak gives spice, making for the perfect balance.  This Reserva was bottled in November 2013 and was aged in bottle for 18 months before being released to the market.

Beronia Reserva 2011 shows an intense cherry red colour.  On the nose, attractive aromas of candied fruits and plum conserve are in perfect harmony with sweet chocolate. On the palate this wine proves itself as being of great character with elegant tannins which give the wine both structure and body. It has a long finish.

This wine is perfect to serve with red meats, game and roasts.  It is recommended that you drink this wine before 2024.

£14.30

Beronia Graciano Rioja 2012 (1x 75cl)

Graciano is relatively scarce in the Rioja region, normally only used in blends with Tempranillo as it is ideal for ageing due to its high levels of acidity. It is an interesting variety which gives a unique aroma that is much more intense than other varieties in Rioja. During alcoholic fermentation great colour extraction takes place. The wine is then aged in new French oak barrels for six months. This wine was bottled in September 2014 and was released to the market after 6 months of sitting in bottle.

Beronia Graciano 2012 shows an intense black cherry colour.  On the nose it has intense aromas of petals and red fruits.  Touches of green pepper blended with dried fruits almonds and walnuts.  On the palate it is fresh and lively with balanced acidity. There are chocolate notes as well as hints of cranberry and cocoa.  This is an elegant, fresh and well structured wine with sweet tannins and a velvety texture.

£15.65

Beronia Rioja Crianza 2013 (1 x 75cl)

The grapes for this wine were collected at the beginning of October. Following harvest the grapes underwent cold maceration for a few days in order to extract aromas and colour however not tannins. Alcoholic fermentation took place at low temperature of less than 26ºC with periodic pumping over. The wine was then aged in mixed oak barrels of American staves and French tops for 12 months giving both vanilla notes from the American oak and spice from the French oak. The wine was bottled in January 2016 and remained in bottle for 3 months before being released to the market.

This Beronia Crianza shows an intense cherry colour. Attractive nose with red fruits and floral aromas in perfect harmony with mineral and cocoa notes. A balanced and sweet palate with the fruit and liquorice standing out over a base of chocolate and coffee.  Persistant and well structured.

This wine is made using the following grapes: 82% Tempranillo, 14% Garnacha and 4% Mazuelo.

Beronia Rioja Crianza Magnum 2011 (1x 1.5L)

Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva 2009 (1x75cl)

Awarded 91 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their March 2017 edition review of Premium Rioja (see blue link below).

Beronia Gran Reserva 2008 - March 2017 Decanter review

The 2008 harvest was classified by the Rioja Regulatory Council as 'Very Good' as it showed extremely high quality which allowed for the production of exceptional wines (including this one!).

For the production of this Gran Reserva, the best grapes from the oldest vineyards were hand-harvested. Following the harvest, the best bunches were selected in the winery. The grapes then underwent a slow and controlled alcoholic fermentation with periodic pumping over to extract colour and aromas.  Following this, the wine remained in French oak barrels for 26 months.

Beronia Gran Reserva 2008 shows a powerful and deep maroon colour. On the nose, it is intense and complex with dried fruits (such as dates) standing out over a base of chocolate and sweet spice from the French oak. On the palate this wine is silky and meaty with pleasant tannins, giving structure and complexity.  This wine shows great personality with body, elegance and intense flavours.

This Gran Reserva is best when decanted before serving due to the long time it has spent ageing in the bottle.  It is ideal when served with red meats, game, mature cheeses and also with chocolate desserts.  Drink it now or you can keep this wine until 2024 before opening it.

Beronia Tempranillo Special Production Rioja 2014 (1 x 75cl)

It's on our Christmas List because ... this is a stunning, unusual, boutique-but-afforable Rioja made from 100% Tempranillo (rare in a Rioja, more the preserve of Riberas) that is full bodied with a lighter balance of oak.  We have also listed some of Beronia's other great Riojas at the foot of this page that we feel are equally worthy.

Bodegas Beronia is quintessentially Rioja. Its wines are defined by the region and the soils in which the vines are grown, and its name linked to the history of the land where the winery is found. In the 3rd Century BC the area known as Rioja today was inhabited by a celtic tribe called the ‘Berones’. The founding ethos of Beronia is strongly allied to the origins of La Rioja. Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of businessmen, friends from the Basque country who would visit La Rioja on holiday. They decided, to produce their own wines to enjoy with the local cuisine,  specialising in Reserva and Gran Reserva style wines. Today Beronia is one of the most renowned Spanish wineries, producing traditional Rioja wines with personality and Beronia style.

This unique wine undergoes double fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic, in American oak barrels. The wine remains for a total of 9 months in the same barrels with periodic batonage. Bottled in March 2015 the wine will continue ageing for a minimum of 6 months before being released to the market.

Intense and deep cherry colour with high intensity. An unusual nose with red fruits and notes of chocolate, cocoa, liquorice and cinnamon from the American oak. Shows a harmonious palate with the cherry dominating. Well integrated oak after 9 months in barrel. Round and fresh, ideal for those looking for something different.

Perfect with smoked meats or fish, patés and cured meats. Recomended consumption over the next 5 years.

Berton Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2014 (1x75cl)

The non-yet-available 2015 vintage has been awarded 95 points and a Platinum Best In Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards (www.decanter.com): see their August 2017 DWWA supplement (see blue link below).

Berton Reserve Shiraz 2015 - August 2017 Decanter review

The 2015 vintage is not yet available anywhere in the UK: it is the intention of both producer and UK sole supplier to sell through the 2014 first with the 2015 vintage arriving in mid-October.

For those unable or unwilling to wait, Exel discussed the relative merits of the 2014 and 2015 vintages with Berton owner, Bob Berton, in person, a few weeks ago at the London Wine Fair. It is Bob's view that the 2014 is the equal of the 2015 but was simply not submitted for review at the previous DWWAs.

The Reserve Shiraz is deepest dark red with a very youthful and vibrant garnet hue. The aromas are powerful and complex with a wealth of fruit ranging from ripe black cherries and blackberries with hints of eucalypt and spice. The rich and full palate displays soft flavours of plum skin, mulberry and hints of vanilla and blackberry, These abundant flavours are underpinned by fine vanilla from the oak and defined by exciting spicy tannins.

Berton Reserve Shiraz 2015 - August 2017 Decanter review

Established by Bob and Cherie Berton in May 1996, Berton Vineyard has been one of Hallgarten's most important partners. The estate covers 30 hectares of land located on gently rolling hills at 450 metres above sea level, in a subregion of Eden Valley in South Australia. The superb Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007, Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state-of- the-art facility has the capacity to process 20,000 tonnes and enables Berton Vineyard to produce value for money wines which sit alongside their premium single vineyard offerings.

Shiraz 93%, Durif 4%, Cabernet Sauvignon 3%. The grapes come from the Barossa Valley, in South Australia. Situated at a latitude of 34° South, the region is made up of rolling hills and valley floors. The growing season often sees hot, warm weather with temperatures of 35°C, which can result in vine stress, helping to concentrate the flavours in the berries. The wide diurnal temperature differences help to retain balancing acidity. Some of the grapes come from Berton's original vineyard in the Eden Valley, where the climate is cooler. The vine age is varied, but all vines have been spur pruned and are generally trained on a single wire cordon trellising system. The vines are planted at approximately 1.8 metres apart with 3.6 metres between the rows, to allow machinery access. The soil styles in the vineyards are varied, ranging from clay, to limestone and sandy soils, with each terroir adding its own characteristic to the final wine.

The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks with regular skin submersion in order to extract the required colour and flavour from the grapes. After fermentation, the wine was pressed off into stainless steel tanks where it completed malolactic fermentation in the late autumn. The wine was then racked off into both French and American oak barrels resulting in a rich, spicy complex Shiraz.

Berton Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (1x75cl)

Awarded 96 points and rare Outstanding status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their April 2017 edition review of New World Cabernet Sauvignons (see blue link below) in which it emerged as their runaway Number One.

Berton Reserve 2014 - April 2017 Decanter review

It's on or Christmas List because ... you love it, we love it and we just couldn't leave it out of our Christmas celebrations! Did you know they also do a great DWWA award winning Shiraz which we've listed at the bottom of this page? Alan, our financial Director also has a penchant for Berton's The Black Shiraz so we have included a link for it too.

One of our biggest hits of 2017!!

Sourced from vineyards in the prized Terra Rossa region of Coonawarra: here the warm days are moderated by offshore breezes and the rich red loam over well-draining limestone soils are the foundations for Coonawarra's justified reputation for producing premium-quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

This Coonawarra beauty (97% Cab Sauv) has an intense, ripe berry bouquet with hints of chocolate and liquorice. The palate is brimming with crushed blackcurrant fruit flavours enhanced by subtle eucalyptus and mint notes characteristic of this region and is beautifully complemented by elegant French oak notes.
