Bodegas y Vinedos Tabula Damana 5 Ribera Del Duero 2016 (1x 75cl)

Bodegas y Viñedos Tábula was created in 2002 with the financial backing of a group of entrepreneurs coming from diverse sectors in the Castilla Y Leon region. Its creator was José Luis Muñoz, a Valladolid entrepreneur who has been at the winery’s helm since the very beginning of the project. What sets this winery apart is the careful respect they pay to the fruit and their constant aim to bring out the terroir in the wines. It was logical that when José Luis Muñoz took the first steps in the project they focused their efforts on vineyard location and vines, whilst scanning the length and breadth of the Ribera del Duero to select the best grapes. Located in Olivares del Duero, the Bodegas Tabula Winery has 24 hectares (60 acres) of vines, all of which offer the natural and technical requirements for the production of high quality, modern-style wines with a good expression of the vineyard.

This wine is 100% Tempranillo.

Finca Villacreces Pruno, Ribera del Duero 2017 (1x75cl)

The stunning Finca Villacreces estate is located in Quintanilla de Onesimo on the 'golden mile', in the heart of Ribera del Duero DO. The 155 hectare property is bordered by the River Duero to the north and by the vineyards of Vega Sicilia to the west. It was purchased by Lalo Antón of Izadi in 2003 to add further scope to their wine portfolio. The vineyards are now farmed organically, with canopy management and natural treatments used instead of artificial chemicals. As expected, Tempranillo is the mainstay of the vineyards, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon also planted.

Grapes for Pruno are only taken from Finca Villacreces’ own vineyards, from slightly younger vines. Until recently, the estate sold this production to some of the high profile wineries in the region. Now that the vines have reached between 10 and 15 years of age, the Izadi family has begun to handpick and vinify the grapes themselves. The vineyards have a mixture of soils: sandy, gravel, shingle and quartz. The vineyards are planted with about 90% Tempranillo (mostly on the sandy vineyards, which give an attractive fleshiness to the wines) and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (mostly on the quartz and shingle, giving more mineral complexity). Organic practises are used as much as possible and the close proximity of the river helps protect against frost. Work is currently being undertaken in the vineyards to raise the height of the canopy to obtain riper, healthier grapes.

The harvest in 2017 was challenging across the whole of Spain with Ribera del Duero being no exception. Growers contended with spring frosts and summer hail which resulted in lower yields. However, the low rainfall meant grapes were perfectly balanced in sugar and acidity.

The Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks. The two varieties were then aged separately in fine-grained, second and third-year French oak barrels (Taransaud and Darnajou) for 12 months after which the final blend was assembled and the wine bottled.

This wine is deep, black cherry in colour. Aromas of red fruit with oaky toffee hints from the ageing in French barrels give way to a sweet and fruit-driven wine on the palate. With elements of ripe fruits and liquorice, this wine has a pleasant and soft finish.

Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero 2015 (1x75cl)

The vineyards here are a mixture of soils: sandy, gravel, shingle and quartz. Each soil type contributes to different flavours in the fruit as well as to very low yields of around just three tonnes per hectare. The vineyards are planted with about 86% Tempranillo (mostly on the sandy vineyards, which give an attractive fleshiness to the wines), 4% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (mostly on the quartz and shingle, giving more mineral complexity). Organic practices are used as much as possible and the close proximity of the river helps protect against frost. The vineyards lie at 710 metres above sea level and are planted with a density of 2,200 vines per hectare.

Budbreak arrived early in the spring. During the flowering stage, a change in weather conditions brought rain and wind and produced significant coulure which meant a 30% reduction in production. The summer was very dry and warm, helping the remaining grapes to ripen fully. The vintage started quite early, with ideal conditions for harvesting high-quality grapes.

Fruit was handpicked into 15 kilogram crates in the second and third weeks of October. The three varieties were fermented separately in small stainless-steel tanks with 25% undergoing malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. The wines were then aged separately in 100% new French oak (Taransaud and Darnajou) for a period of 14 months, after which the final blend was assembled and bottled.

This wine is inky purple in colour with an expressive bouquet of espresso, toasted bread, graphite, wild blueberries, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a full-bodied, full-flavoured, plush wine with layers of spicy black fruit. Well balanced, with lingering hints of smoke.

Marques de Burgos Roble 2016 (1x75cl)

Bodegas LAN’s motivation to expand into other regions in Spain led to the Marqués de Burgos project in Ribera de Duero. After a thorough search within the appellation, the village of Quintana del Pidio was selected as the source of the grapes, as it has a high proportion of old, gnarled vines. These ancient vines produce very low yields (around three tonnes per hectare), giving rise to wines with concentration, intense colour and smooth tannins.

The vineyard is in the province of Burgos, in the area of La Horra, La Aguilera and Quintana del Pidio. Situated at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level, the vines have been traditionally Gobelet trained for more than 30 years. The continental climate, with very warm summers, allow the grapes to easily reach excellent ripeness levels during the growing season.

A mild winter, followed by a rainy spring, increased ground reserves of water, and budding took place later than usual. A hot, dry August and September saw grapes ripen fully, with rains in September and October.

The must was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25°C in order to obtain maximum concentrations of primary fruit. The wine was then aged for eight months in oak barrels (70% from the American Appalachian mountains, 30% French). This was followed by 10 months of bottle ageing prior to release.

100% Tempranillo.

This wine is intense cherry in colour, with purple hues. Flavours of wild berries and a hint of violets provide perfume on the nose. On the palate, there are prominent notes of liquorice, which is very typical of this grape variety, along with touches of cocoa and vanilla on the long finish.

Pago De Los Capellanes Crianza 2016 (1x 75cl)

Founded in Pedrosa de Duero, in the province of Burgos, Pago de los Capellanes was the Rodero Villa family's first wine growing venture. The local clay and gravel soils, the altitude of the Tempranillo vineyards and their meticulous production methods produce timeless wines, noted for their full-bodied nature and velvety texture.

The grapes are drawn from a selection of parcels with an average age of 30 years in the vineyards in Las Laderas del Monzón in Gumiel del Mercado, being on  predomnantly chalky-clay and sandy soils.

Selected harvest in early October. Once the grapes arrive at the winery a controlled alcoholic (primary) fermentation is initiated, with seeding using selected yeasts from our best vineyards, for a period of 30 days with daily pumping over. Malolactic fermentation is done without the addition of bacteria, at a cellar temperature of 20ºC for 24 days and controlling malic and lactic acid levels. The wine is then rested in 300 litre selected grain French oak casks for 12 months.

100% Tempranillo.

A wine with great nuances and balance. A very intense cherry colour with cardinal red rims. Very frank in the nose, with aromas of ripe red fruit and balsamic hints. Smooth in the mouth, filling the palate with exquisite flavours of plum and blackcurrant, plus a long and elegant finish. Well-balanced and with a lively acidity.

Bodegas Protos Crianza 2015 (1x75cl)

The guiding philosophy of Protos is Quality above all. For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of their wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. This also gives them in-depth information about all the grapes to be used before they reach the winery.

100% Tempranillo.

The wine spent 14 months in French (⅔) and American (⅓) oak barrels before maturing in bottle for a further 12 months.

The Protos Crianza has a bright and intense cherry colour with a garnet rim.  On the nose there are red fruit aromas which are powerful yet elegant, with a dry minerality as well as some cocoa bean, creamy oak and hints of spices. The flavour is rich and powerful, fruity with good acidity, a smoky aftertaste and a long toasty finish.

This wine is a good match for grilled red meat, cured meat, game birds, small game, light stews and mild cheese.

Cruz de Alba Crianza, Ribera del Duero 2015 (1x 75cl)

This is the most unconventional winery within the Zamora Company (which also owns Ramon Bilbao and Mar de Frades). Launched in the 2003 vintage, Cruz de Alba is a single-vineyard project based on Finca Los Hoyales, a property that extends over 40 hectares in Padilla de Duero, on Ribera del Duero’s “Golden Mile”.

The plots that make up the estate were purchased from different owners between 2003 and 2005. The oldest vineyard dates back to 1963 and is destined to the top wine Finca Los Hoyales. Further plantings were made in 1989 and 2003. Tempranillo is the dominant grape variety although there are small pockets of Merlot and Cabernet in the vineyard. Poor, sandy soils on limestone are the norm, although there are zones with more presence of clay and loam soils that produce wines with more structure.

Cruz de Alba stands out among the wineries in the group - and in Ribera del Duero more generally - because of its marked use of biodynamics.

Intense, fresh red-berry fruit aromas with spicy nuances which mingle with the subtle underlying mineral base. Supple and meaty on the palate with flavours of plums, cedar and balsamic undertones, passing through the mouth with a pleasant, elegant, well-structured mouth-feel. Long, lingering finish which is both fruity and toasted with a silky aftertaste.

Marques De Burgos Crianza DO Ribera del Duero 2014 (1x75cl)

This wine has rapidly become our 'go-to', affordable Ribera. Riberas have a tendency to be pretty pricey (low yields and quantities produced) and this represents tremendous value for money for this level of quality. At a recent Spanish tasting here in Perth, it saw universal approval and great sales!

At an altitude of 850 metres above sea level, the vines have been traditionally gobelet trained for more than 30 years. The continental climate with very warm summers allows the grapes to reach full ripeness by harvest,

2014 was a very good vintage despite some unusual weather patterns across much of Spain. Spring got off to a quick start, triggering early bud break. An uncharacteristically cool and wet summer posed challenges for preventing rot, but a warm, dry September followed, resulting in some excellent fruit.

The grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed, the must was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25° C. The wine was then regularly pumped over the cap to obtain the maximum concentration of primary aromas. It was aged in French oak barrels for 14 months, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

100% Tempranillo.

This wine is intense cherry red in colour. On the nose it has rich aromas of cherry, red berries and flowers integrated with notes of toasted oak, liquorice, fennel and vanilla. Hints of chocolate and coffee gives this wine a rustic yet satisfying finish.

£16.45

Pago De Los Capellanes Reserva 2015 (1x75cl)

Founded in Pedrosa de Duero, in the province of Burgos, Pago de los Capellanes was the Rodero Villa family's first wine growing venture. The local clay and gravel soils, the altitude of the Tempranillo vineyards and their meticulous production methods produce timeless wines, noted for their full-bodied nature and velvety texture.

This wine is made using a selection of the oldest parcels (80 years) of vines in the Pedrosa de Duero vineyards. The soil is of chalky clay and gravel.

The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest and are loaded into 15 kilo crates. There is then a cold pre-fermentation for 6 days. Controlled alcoholic (primary) fermentation takes place with the addition of selected native yeast from their best vineyards for 20 days with daily pumping over. Malolactic fermentation is done very slowly, without adding bacteria, at a cellar temperature of 20ºC for 28 days.

The wine is then rested in 300-litre, fine-grained, French oak casks for 14 months, then bottled without filtering or clarifying.

The Reserva is ruby red colour with intense garnet tones. It has elegant complexity in the nose with tones of ripe fruit, cherry, redcurrant and smoky hints with a background of liquorice. It is very well balanced in the mouth due to the maturity of the tannins.
