Founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren, Sierra Cantabria is nestled in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town of great winemaking tradition, situated in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria mountain range (1,200 m. of altitude) and the river Ebro (350 m.), create a special microclimate with Mediterranean and Continental characteristics - providing mild winters and gentle summers- unique for vine cultivation. Everything in the vineyard is done with respect for the environment as well as following the biorhythms of the plant.
Marcos Eguren of Sierra Cantabria describes the Coleccion Privada as “The union of tradition with nowadays ”.
2013 was a vintage characterised by low production levels as well as excellent physiological, phenolic and aromatic ripeness in the grapes.
The vines used to make this wine were planted in 1957 and 1959. The grapes were all picked carefully by hand when the the bunches were in perfect condition for both health and maturity. A second selection of the grapes was completed at the winery using a sorting table. The grapes were all de-stemmed before being allowed to macerate on the skins for 15 days. This included daily pump-overs; these were energetic in the beginning with diminishing frequency in the final days. The must was then fermented using indegenous yeast selected from their vineyards and it was temperature controlled (23º C, 75.2ºF). Malolactic fermentation the occurred in barrel. The wine was aged for 16 months in new oak Bordelaise barrels. (50% French oak, 50% American oak.)
The wine has an intense cherry colour. Its aromas are delicate, yet elegant, with definite fruity expression, spice and subtle notes of petals and creamy traces of well-integrated oak. This pure Tempranillo is still firm and grippy but has concentration of blackberry fruit richness and freshness all coming together to make a stylish and powerful modern Rioja.
