Beronia Blanco Viura Rioja 2017 (1x75cl)

Bodegas Beronia is quintessentially Rioja. Its wines are defined by the region and the soils in which the vines are grown, and its name linked to the history of the land where the winery is found. Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of businessmen, friends from the Basque country who would come to La Rioja on holiday. The friends had a great love of food and wine and created their own gastronomic society in the area. They decided to produce their own wines to enjoy with the local cuisine,  specialising in Reserva and Gran Reserva style wines. Today Beronia is one of the most renowned Spanish wineries both in international and domestic markets, producing pure and traditional Rioja wines.

The grapes were harvested at the end of September. This variety gives fruity wines with floral notes but also has noteable levels of acidity. The grapes underwent static maceration without de-stalking for 16 hours. Fermentation was carried out at a controlled temperature of between 14 and 16°C for 15 days. The wine then remained in bottle for two months before being released to the market.

This Viura has a bright yellow and green colour.  On the nose it is fresh with intense herbal aromas including fennel.  There is also a notable presence of white fruits such as pear and surprisingly also orange peel.  On the palate this wine is full, round and lively with aniseed notes which together with the fruit gives freshness.  It is long and persistent.

This young, fresh wine should be served well chilled and is ideal with salads, fish and white meats.

El Coto Rioja Blanco 2018 (1x75cl)

El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown from modest beginnings into one of the best known Rioja producers. Today El Coto has over 700 hectares of vineyard in production across the three Rioja DOCa sub-zones of Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. They also source grapes from all three areas, but mostly from Rioja Alavesa. Head winemaker César Fernandez oversees production, starting with hand-picking into 350 kg crates to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition. Modern and intelligently designed, the emphasis in the winery is on temperature control and gentle handling of the grapes.

The Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc grapes were sourced from the highaltitude vineyards in Rioja Baja, vineyards are situated over 840 metres above sea level. The Viura grapes were mainly sourced from Rioja Alta, from limestone and clay soils.

2018 was a complex year with a generally cold, wet spring delaying budbreak and the damp weather during flowering leading to higher than usual incidences of mildew in the vineyard. Early summer was initially rainy, but a hot August allowed the vines to catch up and ripening occurred gradually through the cooler than usual September which helped the grapes achieve great balance and flavour. Generally, the 2018 vintage was a generous harvest producing fresh wines with lower alcohols than recent years.

The grapes were instantly chilled upon arrival at the winery and then pressed using a pneumatic press. The grapes were then fermented at 14 -18ºC in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 12-20 days, to preserve aromas and retain freshness. No malolactic fermentation was allowed to take place and the wine was bottled without ageing to maximise freshness and crisp acidity.

91% Viura, 5% Verdejo, 4% Sauvignon Blanc.

This wine is pale lemon in colour with aromas of peaches, apples, citrus and tropical fruits. On the palate, it has lively acidity leading to a dry, fruity finish.

ABV = 12.0%.

Honorio Rubio Lias Finas Edicion Limitada 2015 (1x75cl)

Bodegas Honrio Rubio is a small, dynamic and naturally-oriented family winery set in Cordovín, a high alititude town in the Rioja Alta sub-zone of Rioja. Honorio Rubio, the man, runs the winery with a maverick and visionary spirit, building upon the foundation of his family’s more than 100 year winemaking tradition, subterranean cellars and winery in Cordovín.

Honorio Rubio’s long lees aged white “Lias Finas” is one of his five limited production series wines. It combines the richness of a long lees contact, barrel-aged white common in Premier and Grand Cru white Burgundy with a selection of his best high altitude Viura grapes. It’s a fresh, modern and elegantly rich style of white Rioja.

It all began with Honorio’s efforts to explore traditional methods of stabilizing wine and the idea of creating world class whites with his best grapes. For “Lias Finas” Honorio took cues from the hundreds of year old traditions of long lees contact common to the top white wine appellations in France and the natural wine movement’s valorization of lost techniques. The result is a refined and well-structured white showing a kinship to white Burgundy, that at the same time retains its Rioja identity.

This wine is made from the Viura variety. The wine rests on its fine lees for 16 months, which gives it smoothness and finesse. The wine spends 6 months in French oak barrels (20% new and 80% 2nd & 3rd use) and 10 months in tank.

The Honorio Rubio “Lias Finas” Crianza White is a bright, lucid straw color. The nose is fragrant with racy scents of lemon with touches of vanilla, minerals and leesy undertones. The attack is bright and lively with a core of lemon flavors accented by notes of lime pith, fresh apple and creamy lemon curd. The mid-palate is harmonious with lees-driven density and subtle richness, undergirded with chalk and stone minerality. The finish is long, smooth and elegant with lingering notes of fresh cut lemon zest. A striking re-styling of white Rioja.

Rioja Organza Blanco Reserva, Sierra Cantabria 2017 (1x75cl)

The 2016 vintage was awarded 92 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their September 2018 edition expert review of white Rioja (see blue link below)...

Rioja Organza Blanco Reserva, Sierra Cantabria 2016 - Sept 2018 Decanter review

Founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren, Sierra Cantabria is nestled in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town of great winemaking tradition, situated in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria mountain range (1,200 m. of altitude) and the river Ebro (350 m.), create a special microclimate with Mediterranean and Continental characteristics - providing mild winters and gentle summers- unique for vine cultivation. Everything in the vineyard is done with respect for the environment as well as following the biorhythms of the plant.

The grapes are harvested by hand with only the best quality grapes making it into the winery.  Further selection then happens in the winery using a sorting table.  The must is cold soaked for 14 hours prior to fermentation. It is fermented in new French oak barrels from the Vosgues area. The temperature is controlled between 14 and 16º C. This wine is fermented only using indigenous yeast selected from their vineyards.  The wine is aged for 11 months on its fine lees, with batonnage taking place twice a week during the first six months.

The Organza Blanco 2016 is bright gold in colour. It offers a nose of tropical fruit, minerality and sweet spices. Wild herbs, beeswax, grapefruit and nutmeg spice combine appealingly on the palate here.

Rioja Rosado, Sierra Cantabria 2018 (1x 75cl)

Founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren, Sierra Cantabria is nestled in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town of great winemaking tradition, situated in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria mountain range (1,200 m. of altitude) and the river Ebro (350 m.), create a special microclimate with Mediterranean and Continental characteristics - providing mild winters and gentle summers - unique for vine cultivation. On the other hand, the summer thermal jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) creates an increase in the level of polyphenols, normally associated with excellent quality wines.

Vintae Heredad de Tejada White Rioja, Bodega Classica 2018 (1x75cl)

Heredad de Tejada is a collection of wines made in the heart of Rioja Alta. Its winemaking process combines tradition and innovation, using modern facilities to create wines while following a natural process. For example, this wine is made in large vats, imitating the traditional winemaking method in "lagos abiertos", where whole grapes are deposited in open vats and the carbonic maceration takes place.

The harvest takes place during the entire month of october. Picking of the fruit is conducted in 15 kg. boxes, which are quickly transported to the winery; the clusters that do not meet optimum conditions are disregarded.

The wine is aged for 2 months in French oak barrels.

This is a straw yellow colour wine. Ripe fruit, dates and banana notes stand out on the nose in combination with the nuances of a Crianza, making it an interesting and complex wine. On the palate, it is fresh and fleshy, leaving a long, balanced and pleasant aftertaste.

ABV = 12.5%.
