Delicate, intriguing and fresh on the palate, but warm and ripe at the same time. Light yellow in colour with a few golden highlights - all of which is due to the balance between its youthful flavours and those provided by oak.
A young, lovely, fresh wine, straw-yellow reflecting the variety from which it is made. Smooth and pleasant on the palate, well-balanced, with a fresh and fruity finish.
The 2015 vintage was awarded 90 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their June 2017 edition review of 'Weekday Wines' (under £25) (see blue link below). We appreciate it is subjective, but we judge the current 2016 vintage (2015 has sold out!) to be of equal quality and drinkability!
It's on our Christmas List because... it's a Decanter-rated Albariño at a great price (for what is a pricey and trendy grape variety). We've yet to find a Rias Baixas of this quality at this price. For a bit more body in an Albariño, try the classic Martin Codax numbers: the sobre lias (lees contact) version is unusual and very hard to find.
Pagos del Rey was started in 2002 with the aim of making quality wines in the most prestigious wine making regions in Spain, with wines with their own personality. The company has wineries in Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda and Toro. All of them have a modern design that combines tradition and innovation and the latest technology in wine making.
Made from Albariño grapes grown in the Salnés Valley region of Rías Baixas, located close to the town of Cambados. Here, on undulating hills, the vineyards are planted on rocky and alluvial soils; they benefit from cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
Unoaked, the wine is a bright, pale lemon colour with hints of apple green. Aromas of white flowers, hints of peach and apricot lead to a fresh, fruity palate; it has a lovely intensity and an almost saline minerality.
This wine is perfect with seafood, grilled octopus (pulpo in Spanish), and other dishes based on seafood, oysters, or mussels.
Like its more renowned cousin, Albariño, this 100% Godello is crisp and fresh with light peach notes and a floral finish. Cool climate Spain is arguably producing some of the best fresh white styles in the world.
Awarded 89 points and Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their July 2017 edition review of Rueda Verdejos (see blue link below).
Straw yellow colour with emerald hues, bright and clean. On the nose this 100% Verdejo is intense and aromatic with a tropical character and citrus notes such as lime and peach. Ideal as an aperitif or with starters like smoked salmon. Also it is a great companion for any kind of vegetable dishes such as artichokes and asparagus.
Awarded 92 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their September 2017 review of Sparkling Wine (alternatives) (see blue link below).
Bright gold. It offers a nose of tropical fruit, minerality and sweet spices. Wild herbs, beeswax, grapefruit and nutmeg spice combine appealingly on the palate here.
Although produced on quite a large scale, a terrific amount of TLC goes into the production of this wine. The grapes are picked by hand and vinified by separate vineyard plots to reflect the individual expression of each plot. The wine is left on lees for 8 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. The result is a rich, complex wine with hints of apple and ripe fruits. In 2011, Valdamor Albarino was judged one of the top 28 Spanish White Wines in the New Wave Spanish Wine Awards.
Pale yellow with greenish tones. The aroma is intense with a frutal predominance and spicy notes of the barrique. On the palate it is rich in nuances with an adequate acidity and balance. An extraordinary white wine elaborated in surprisingly fashion for you to enjoy in time.
A slightly oily mouthfeel with classic notes of lychee, rose petal and cooked stone fruit.
Intense and clean fruit aromas in this vintage, topped by citrics and white fruits such as banana and sweet pear, accompanied by light aniseed tones. Aromas enhanced by the cold maceration. This 2014 vintage shines by its strength and intensity on the palate. This crisp white wine maintains a balance of acidity and fruit density. Broad and citrus after nose with a long finish.
An elegant, vibrant white with a crisp, refreshing bite. Notes of wild blossom, green apple and lemon peel are matched by a creamy, weighty texture and long lemony finish.
Intense, complex aroma of exotic fruit (passion fruit and green fig), delicately ennobled by fine notes of toast and vanilla (from the ageing in new French oak). Good balance in the mouth thanks to the wine's acidity, with floral notes that pleasantly linger mid-palate.
Pale yellow with green hues, clean and bright. Intense, floral and clean aromas with tropical fruit notes of pineapple, coconut and grapefruit. Fresh and fruity on the palate with an oily mouth-feel and medium length.
