The guiding philosophy of Protos is "Quality above all". For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of their wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. The vineyards are controlled exhaustively by both technicians and experts throughout the growth cycle, yielding a production of the highest quality. This also gives them in-depth information about all the grapes to be used before they reach the winery.
Harvesting for this wine is done at night, is 100% manual and the production was gathered in 20-kilo boxes; the grapes are then spread over sorting tables. This allows them to guarantee that only completely healthy, whole grapes reach the fermentation tanks. After fermentation this wine spends a further 3 months resting on its fine lees.
This wine has a greenish straw colour and is bright and clean. The Protos Verdejo is powerful yet fruity with green apple, citrus and tropical fruit aromas as well as white blossoms, fragant herbs and fennel hints. The flavours are very fresh, with good acidity, fruity, well balanced flavours. It is a complex wine, with a long finish.
This wine is the perfect match for fish and seafood dishes as well as vegetable soups and souffles.

Not everyone knows of the Albariño grape and Galicia’s Rias Baixas. It’s always been there, but only recently have UK consumers sat up and taken serious notice. One also finds Albariño – considered the most elegant of Spain’s white varieties - just over the border into Portugal in its Vinho Verde, but the Rias Baixas wines, we would say, are altogether more classy and less “summer holiday”. What we love most of all is that Rias Baixas is a fabulous and serious all-rounder: you get the refreshment and crisp, fruity hit of a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio, yet with all the body and complexity of a quality Chardonnay or Viognier. Food-wise, it’ll consequently go with many, many things: fishes, meats, soups, cheeses. This is a quality Rias at a great price and not to be missed.
The 2015 vintage was awarded 90 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their June 2017 edition review of 'Weekday Wines' (under £25) (see blue link below). We appreciate it is subjective, but we judge the current 2016 vintage (2015 has sold out!) to be of equal quality and drinkability!
Pagos del Rey was started in 2002 with the aim of making quality wines in the most prestigious wine making regions in Spain, with wines with their own personality. The company has wineries in Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda and Toro. All of them have a modern design that combines tradition and innovation and the latest technology in wine making.
Made from Albariño grapes grown in the Salnés Valley region of Rías Baixas, located close to the town of Cambados. Here, on undulating hills, the vineyards are planted on rocky and alluvial soils; they benefit from cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
Unoaked, the wine is a bright, pale lemon colour with hints of apple green. Aromas of white flowers, hints of peach and apricot lead to a fresh, fruity palate; it has a lovely intensity and an almost saline minerality.
This wine is perfect with seafood, grilled octopus (pulpo in Spanish), and other dishes based on seafood, oysters or mussels.
Pale yellow with greenish tones. The aroma is intense with a frutal predominance and spicy notes of the barrique. On the palate it is rich in nuances with an adequate acidity and balance. An extraordinary white wine elaborated in surprisingly fashion for you to enjoy in time.
A slightly oily mouthfeel with classic notes of lychee, rose petal and cooked stone fruit.
Intense and clean fruit aromas in this vintage, topped by citrics and white fruits such as banana and sweet pear, accompanied by light aniseed tones. Aromas enhanced by the cold maceration. This 2014 vintage shines by its strength and intensity on the palate. This crisp white wine maintains a balance of acidity and fruit density. Broad and citrus after nose with a long finish.
An elegant, vibrant white with a crisp, refreshing bite. Notes of wild blossom, green apple and lemon peel are matched by a creamy, weighty texture and long lemony finish.
