Bellavista Franciacorta Rose Brut Vintage 2013 (1x 75cl)

This estate makes some of Italy's finest sparkling wines from its 200 hectares of vineyard situated in the western part of the Franciacorta zone in a natural amphitheatre. The glacial soil is full of stones, and provides the ideal environment for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes used in the production of their Franciacorta. Bellavista meaning 'beautiful view' in Italian was founded by Vittorio Moretti in the early 1970s, with the first vintage produced in 1979. In 1981, he met a young winemaker, Mattia Vezzola and this partnership transformed Bellavista into Italy's leading producer of quality sparkling wine.

Bellavista has chosen 190 hectares of vines in 10 communes within the Franciacorta DOCG. The vineyards have some of the best exposure, character and expressive potential in the area. This has given rise to 107 small crus that express the intrinsic personality of the land and the subtle nuances of its character and personality.

The 2013 wines are well-balanced with notable structure and richness, with higher levels of tartaric acid and a lower pH than usual.

The Franciacorta Rosé Brut is a special cuvée of limited production, a blend of at least 30 of the best parcels from the Bellavista vineyards, some of which are fermented and matured in small oak barrels. The wine is made partially from red grapes in submerged cap maceration, where the must is in contact with the Pinot Noir skins until fermentation, giving the wine a delicate colour.

Delicate pink with persistent bubbles. The nose opens with intense white peach that mellows into wild strawberries, golden apple, rosehip and a hint of toast. On the palate, the wine is dry with well balanced, fresh acidity. An elegant background of blackcurrant and sweet almond flavours linger on the finish.

Champagne Jacquart Blanc de Blanc 2012 (1x75cl)

The varied origins of their Chardonnays are one of the key components of the Jacquart signature. This very singular 100% Chardonnay cuvée is the fruit of a blend of a variety of nuances, selected with lavish care and attention. Crafted from one single variety, Chardonnay, and only the noblest of grapes, which find their pure and unreserved expression in a vintage of absolute exception. The 2009 vintage will be remembered for its excellent conditions and superb balance.

This champagne is made using the area's traditional methods but it also spends 5 - 6 years maturing on its lees giving the champagne its unique character.

A seductive nose, full of finesse, with the fragrance of acacia flowers, rose petals and lime blossom. A few minutes airing allows notes of preserved lemon, almond milk, fresh hazelnut, brioche and pear compote to develop. Fresh and supple with beautifully creamy, soft effervescence, this is a mouth-filling champagne with a chalky minerality and pronounced aromas of Mirabel plums and herbs such as coriander and anise. The finish is lingering, concentrated, full, sensual and mouthwateringly saline.

Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 1995 (1x 75cl)

Awarded 96 points and a Platinum Best In Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards (www.decanter.com): see their August 2017 DWWA supplement (see blue link below).

Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 1995 - August 2017 Decanter review

Charles Heidsieck is one of the most admired Champagne houses thanks to the unrivalled and consistently high quality of its wines. The current range is one of the most awarded collections of wines in the world. The intricacies of the champagnes' complex make-up have been perfected over the years by one of the most celebrated winemaking teams in Champagne - between three winemakers they have been awarded 'Sparkling Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge fifteen times. This winemaking legacy, paired with the house's flamboyant history since its foundation in 1851 by the man who would become known as 'Champagne Charlie', makes it a unique offering from Champagne: a house with great, hand-crafted wines, heritage and proven quality.

The 1995 Blanc des Millénaires is a blend of Chardonnay from five crus: Cramant for complexity and ageability, Avize for verve and minerality, Oger for creaminess and weight, Mesnil-sur-Oger for balance and Vertus for floral freshness.

1995 was a fresh and balanced vintage, producing wines of excellent ageing potential. Generally good conditions throughout summer and autumn meant grapes were harvested in prime condition. It was the first universally declared vintage since 1990.

After fermentation, the wine is racked to separate the lees and then undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. After blending the different crus, the wine is bottled and selected yeast added for the second fermentation. The bottles are placed in the cellar at a temperature of 10°C, and aged for at least 15 years before release.

Exceptional. This displays all the noble characteristics of mature Chardonnay and its incredible potential for ageing. Pale gold colour with pale green hues. The bouquet is balanced with a richness and distinct pastry aromas expressing full buttery notes, intense cinnamon and vanilla spice. Silky notes of candied apricots, quince and dried fruits, hazelnuts and almonds.

Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV (1x75cl)

Charles Heidsieck have built exceptional relationships with the most experienced growers across the Champagne region, and can draw on a rich palette of crus. Precise selection of grapes takes place from 60 specific sites. Vineyards which are integral to producing grapes which build the house style are Oger for Chardonnay for its texture, floral notes and ageing ability, Ambonnay for Pinot Noir for its power, vinosity and fruit, and Verneuil for Pinot Meunier for its acidity, body and aromatics.

After the first fermentation, the wine is racked to separate the lees and then undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. After blending, using 40% reserve wines which have an average age of 10 years, the cuvée is bottled and selected yeast added to begin the second fermentation. The bottles are placed in the cellars at a temperature of 10°C. In order to achieve the depth and complexity required by the house style, Charles Heidsieck age their Non-Vintage champagne for 5 years before disgorging, much longer than the legal requirement of 15 months.

The Brut Réserve NV is a radiant pale gold colour with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is characterised by complex pastry aromas, with an opulent combination of ripe apricot, mango and greengages, dried fruits, pistachio and almond. The palate begins with a silky-smooth sensation, developing into ripe fleshy apricot, melon and enticing plum pastry notes and delicate spice. There is perfect balance of freshness and generosity.

Cuvee Prestige Millesime, Champagne Gobillard 2010 (1x 75cl)

Awarded 90 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their January 2018 edition panel review of Vintage Champagne (see blue link below).

Gobillard Cuvee Prestige Brut 2010 - January 2018 Decanter review

Hard to believe today, perhaps, but the 1930s were a tough time in Champagne. Only the most famous names were enjoying success and prosperity, while smaller producers and growers suffered in relative poverty. All of which makes Gervais Gobillard’s decision to branch out on his own, buying two hectares of vines in Hautvillers in 1933, particularly courageous. This is the true heart of Champagne. Thierry lives about 10 metres from the grave of Dom Pérignon, and decades of hard work have secured 26 hectares of vines, much of it Premier Cru. Grapes from carefully selected growers are also sourced, yielding a range of Champagnes that accentuate brightness, minerality and elegance over power and richness.

The grapes for this cuvée are selected from old vines with low production, which have the the best exposure, located mid-slope on the chalk. The base wines from this first plot selection, more concentrated, will then undergo a blind taste test which is very rigorous before it is included in the cuvee that will become the flagship of this Champagne House.

This fine, vintage 'grower Champagne' is aged for at least four years before it is ready for release, the extended time on the lees creates complex tertiary aromas of dried fruits and hazelnuts that lead to an elegant palate of citrus blossom, greengage and honey. It is a connoisseur's wine, made with hand selected premier cru grapes, delivering the ultimate expression of premium Champagne, a style that will work perfectly as a distinguished food match or sophisticated aperitif.
