Speyside Distillery SPEY 12 Year Old (1x 70cl)

In 1770, John & Robert Harvey, they founders of Speyside Distillery began their whisky journey by firstly founding Yorker distillery then subsequently Dundashill and Bruichladdich distilleries.  Lord Byron, in celebration of his wedding in 1815 sent gifts to his wedding guests including King George III, a cask of scotch whisky thought to be SPEY Single Malt.

Speyside Distillery, nestled within the magnificent Cairngorm Mountains is widely acknowledged by many as being the prettiest of all Scotland’s distilleries. Originally a barley mill and croft dating back to the 1700’s, it finally closed in 1965. Over the next 25 years from 1965 it was slowly and lovingly converted into a single malt distillery, which then started producing spirit on Christmas Day 1990. The distillery draws it’s water from the Spey River tributary. The River Tromie using the old mill lade, which originally ran the waterwheel that powered the old mill. The old mill and water wheel were retained and are still in working order.

This is a classic 12 Year Old Speyside, which has spent most of its life ageing in Bourbon casks. This bottling has spent 6 months in new oak from specially reconditioned barrels. The new oak lends colour and flavours of oak and vanilla to give a smooth and rounded dram typical from its region of production. The rich gold colour of this Speyside malt whisky promises much. Pear drops and green apples characterise the initial impact of this whisky. Vanilla follows together with hints of nuts and raisins. This whisky has a long finish, which is fresh and clean. A great whisky for any time of the day.
