Stroma takes its name from a windswept isle situated off the rugged Caithness coast. Translating as the ‘island in the stream’, which also refers to the dangerous currents on the island’s shores, including the infamous ‘Swilkie’ whirlpool. Stroma’s lighthouse warns ships of these nearby powerful currents. Made at the distillery with award-winning Old Pulteney single malt whisky. Persie Gin is the brainchild of the man behind the world’s first touring gin club, Simon Fairclough. Travelling up and down the country with a carload of over 150 gins, he was able to see first-hand which gin style scored top marks most often. But there wasn’t just one: there were three. Very quickly it became clear to Simon that three styles proved consistently most popular by a wide margin – fruity gins, savoury gins and slightly sweeter gins. So up front, he knew that Persie Gin needed to consist of a family of three expressions, so there would be something for everyone.
Secondly, top-scoring gin had more than a nice taste: it had aroma. With over 75% of flavour down to smell, aroma is the single biggest influence among tasters for liking each gin. So you could say he followed his nose. The result is Persie Gin: three distinct styles of aromatic gin created and distilled in the former Persie Hotel at the foot of Glenshee in Perthshire.
Hand-made in small batches in a bespoke, 230-litre copper pot still, the gin is distilled with pure glen water from the local hills. Each gin uses carefully chosen botanicals to evoke an emotive and comforting scent.
The Persie Herby & Aromatic gin has the aromas and flavours of fragrant herb gardens with bay trees, rosemary and basil. Is this just another gin? Certainly not! Admittedly, it appears somewhat eccentric to claim that a recipe for gin has the power to unite great British traditions, the exoticness of India, and the purity and nativeness of the Black Forest. And yet it is precisely this eccentricity that defines the enigmatic character of Montgomery Collins, from whom the Schwarzwald Dry Gin originates. A good third of this gin's ingredients come from the Black Forest itself and are definitely not what you would find in a typical gin! Along with bramble leaves and spruce shoots, Montgomery Collins also chose to include angelica, acacia flower, camomile, rose hip peel, sage, verbena, and hawthorn berries in his closely guarded recipe. The commander's original ground-breaking idea for creating a new type of gin was based on combining exotic spices with botanicals native to the Black Forest.
The key to this eccentric blend, however, is another local staple that seems both surprising and yet made to enhance the right gin. Would you have guessed that the cranberry is what gives Monkey 47 its definitive twist? All the basic aromas you'd want from a good gin - refreshing acidity, lasting bitter notes, and a slight sweetness - can be found among the natural strengths of this tart fruit. It's that certain something that marries the rich untamed nature of the Black Forest's upper reaches to the extravagance of the British Empire.
