Springbank distillery is located in Campbeltown, a picturesque Scottish town situated at the southern end of the Kintyre Peninsula on the glorious west coast. Dividing the Firth of Clyde and the Atlantic Ocean, a sea breeze swirls around the air and a soft Scottish misty glow travels through the town that is rich in heritage, and of course, rich in whisky history. Springbank was established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still. The distillery is now in the hands of the current Chairman, Hedley G. Wright, Mitchell’s great, great grandson – he is the fifth generation of the Mitchell family to own and manage Springbank. Being based in Campbeltown, the once proclaimed ‘whisky capital of the world’, it is no surprise that many of the methods established by their forefathers are still applied in the distillery today.
This 10-year-old offers whisky drinkers the perfect introduction to the Springbank range. Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, it is perfectly balanced from the first sip through to the full, rich finish. It has aromas of orchard fruit (pear) with a hint of peat, vanilla and malt. The palate has hints of malt, oak, spice, nutmeg and cinnamon, vanilla essence. The finish is sweet, with a lingering salty tingle.
