Stark-Conde, Syrah 2017 - jancisrobinson.com April 2021 review
Stark-Condé Wines was launched in Stellenbosch in 1998 by Hans and Midori Schroder with a focus on producing hand-crafted premium wines. It is located in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch. It is a dramatic valley with steep changes in vineyard elevation from 150 to 600 metres making for a range of sites with distinct characteristics. At Stark-Condé, they stick to traditional winemaking methods: open tank fermentation meticulous sorting of grapes hand-punchdowns basket pressing and maturation in small French oak barrels.
This is their estate blend of Syrah. It is primarily from what they call Block 1, which is full of fist-size river stones; it is surprising that anything can grow. The dense, structured fruit from that vineyard is complemented by two other vineyard blocks. They added about 5% whole bunch to the ferments. About 50% was done with natural yeasts. All the wine was aged in small French oak for 20 months, 20% new. A fine, elegant style of Syrah.

Stark-Conde, Syrah 2017 - fiche technique
Deep purple tinged colour. Concentrated dark fruit aromas with liquorice and violet and white pepper notes. The palate is rich and broad with layers of fruit and a fine-grained tannin structure.
