The 2017 vintage was awarded 93 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their October 2018 edition panel tasting of Value Malbec (see blue link below). Despite the apppearance of the review, the 2017 vintage is categorically not yet commercially in the UK and appears still to be some months away. The 2016 is excellent!
Susana Balbo Crios Malbec 2017 - Oct 2018 Decanter review
Susana not only became the first female enologist in Argentina after graduating with honours from Don Bosco University in Mendoza in 1981, but also was brave enough (or crazy enough as some would have thought at that time) to build an export category for Malbec when no one knew about this grape variety.
Susana enhanced the reputation of this distinguished variety which stands out for its notes of black cherries, spices and violets. The winemakers describe it simply in a few words - it is fruity with spicy notes!
The grapes for this wine were harvested by hand from vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley. It spends 25 days macerating to extract both colour and flavour before spending 9 months ageing in French oak barrels.
The wine has a beautiful reddish-purple colour. The aromas are a mix of freshly crushed black cherries with subtle coffee and vanilla notes, just enough to balance with the exuberant fruit. On the palate, the flavours of cherries and spice are obvious, and the jammy fruit quality is also prominent, with hints of spice and sandalwood lurking in the background.
